Lincoln musici ans and artists coming into Lincoln will be featured in interviews and discussions of their music. At 8 p.m. "Jazz Today" takes over. This program will center on modern and avant-garde jazz. Much of this will be music not nor- entertainment notes mally heard on commercial radio stations. To finish off the program, from 10 p.m. to midnight, the theme will be "Jazz Standards." This part of the program will be devoted to more traditional jazz and jazz-influenced music such as swing, blues and rhythm and blues. Featured artists will include Pete Fountain, Count Basie and B.B. King, among others. "Saturday Night Jazz" will run every Saturday night from 6 p.m. to midnight on KRNU (90.3 FM) from UNL. The program host is Kirk Ehrlich. The Merchant of Venice, the second play in this season's "The Shakespeare Plays," will be presented tonight at 8, repeating Sunday, March 1 , at 10 p.m. on the Nebraska Educational Television Network. Warren Mitchell and Gemma Jones star as Shylock and Portia in this Shakespearean tragicomedy dealing with the struggle between justice and mercy, which is considered one of Shakespeare's most popular, controversial and thought-provoking plays. Mitchell became a British television star with his portrayal of Alf Garnett, the bigoted central character in "Till Death Us Do Part " the series on which "All in the Family" is based. Jones is best known to American audi ences as public television's "The Dutchess of Duke Street." The play has two basic plots: the potentially tragic story of the merchant, Antonio, who promises a pound of flesh as security for a loan from the moneylender, Shy lock; and the romantic tale of Portia, forced by her father's will to marry whoever chooses the sealed casket which contains her picture. The plots come together in a trial scene, in which the disguised Portia thwarts Shy lock's murderous demand for Antonio's flesh. The "Shakespeare Plays" production is directed by Jack Gold, whose credits include "The Naked Civil Ser vant," and the recent Alec Guinness special, "Little Lord Fauntleroy." Jonathan Miller is producer of the series. Cablevision has announced that on March 1, the 24 hour Cable News Network (CNN) will be added to the Lincoln programming line-up. The Atlantic-based Cable News Network is available exclusively to cable viewers via satellite and currently services over 4.5 million cable homes. CNN was the most requested new basic service by Lincoln subscribers and non-subscribers in a recent survey conducted by Cablevision. Among the features included in the CNN programming line-up are two-hour prime time news, women's features, business and financial news, xietailed sports reports, weather reports, and informational agricultural reports, sportsman's weather, nationwide real estate reports, and travel and leisure news. In order to accommodate the addition of CNN, Dick Bates, Cablevision director or programming, said several of the programs currently seen on Channel 9 will be moved to other channels. Both "Hub's Corner", a weekly real estate program, and programming from the Christian Broadcasting Network, will be moved to Cablevision Channel 4 and "Lincoln In View" and "Issues Lincoln" will be moved to Cablevision Channel 10, Lincoln's public and government access channel.
