page 10 daily nebraskan friday, february 20, 1981 Iba: UNL must control game to beat Missouri By Bob Asmussen Nebraska will put its Big Fight lead on the line Saturday when the Huskcrs travel to Columbia, Mo., to attempt to end a seven-year losing streak against the Tigers. "To beat Missouri we have to control the tempo of the game," Coach Moe Iba said. "We don't want to get in a running game with Missouri; we want to come down the floor and take good shots." Iba said the Dr. Jckyll-Mr. Hyde theory tits Missouri. "They play a different type of game at home," Iba said. "At home they run all the time, hut on the road they seem reluctant to push the ball up the floor." One surprise for the lluskers, he said, has been the play of hric Williams. The 6-0 sophomore from South Bend. Intl.. scored 13 points against Iowa State Wed nesday night. It was the most extensive action Williams has seen this year. "With Ray Collins out, Hric is going to see more playing time," Iba said. "He knows he's going to play more and he has really come through." Iba said he realizes the Huskcrs have to stop all five Missouri players. "At every position they have an offens ive threat," he said. "Jon Sundvold is playing well. Rick Frazier is playing good on both ends of the court. Curtis Berry has really come back after his early season slump." Iba said he doesn't know what to ex pect from Tiger center Steve Stipanovich. "He plays different from game to game," he said. "One game he's hot and the next game he can't hit a thing. He's very difficult to figure out." Iba said he knows how important the game is but he added that it's only one of three games the lluskers have left to play. Still, a victory would give the lluskers a boost in their quest for a Big Fight title. "If we can come out of Missouri with a victory, we'll be in good shape as far as the league race is concerned," he said. The game will be regionally televised by NBC. Nebraska and Missouri meet at Missouri Saturday. NU, Sooner rivalry continues without Conner By Kim Hachiya Gymnastics fans hoping to see a display by Oklahoma's big guns at Sunday's 4 p.m. dual between the lluskers and the Sooners will be disappointed. OU's Bart Conner will not be competing, according to Sooner Coach Paul Ziert, who said Conner is healthy, but Ziert wants to check the progress of 1 1 other ath letes on his team. Husker Coach Francis Allen said it was to Conner's advantage to not compete against Jim Hartung, although Hartung will not be competing all-around this meet because of a month-old ankle injury. "They're afraid he (Hartung) will beat Bart," Allen said. "If Jim ever outscores Bart in a meet, he'll beat him every time." Allen said Conner's not competing may be good strategy for Ziert. "If he comes here and loses with Bart competing he won't look too good," Allen said. He added that he thought it was too bad Hartung and Conner couldn't compete head-to-head because it would disappoint fans who come specifically to see the two perform. I guess it isn't Ziert's job to please Nebraska fans, but if it were me and I had a senior gymnast who hadn't competed in a meet this year, I'd use him," Allen said. "Bart is not as durable an athlete as Hartung, however, but I can't see hiding him for the big meets only." Whenever Oklahoma and Nebraska face off, rumors of a "feud" between Allen and Ziert surface. "Anytime you have two teams as strong as ours are, there's bound to be some competitiveness," Ziert said. "There's not as much hostility between us as was made out to be. "Actually the 'war' between us did gymnastics a lot of good. It brought fans in from out of the woods who ex pected to see a knock down, drag-out between us right there on the floor. Gymnastics isn't that kind of com petitiveness though." Allen partially agreed with Ziert. "His personality and mine just don't match up," Allen said. "He argues as a daily challenge. He was a debater in college and he likes to argue. I don't. My style is just different than his." Allen said the meet would be a good one, with the lluskers scoring around 280. "Hartung won't be going full tilt, and we're only ent ering Scott Johnson in the parallel bars, because of the cast on his ankle. We figure he can score a nine-plus even with a cast." Allen said Phil Cahoy will be the number one all arounder despite a sore shoulder. "We know the formula," Allen said. "Now all we have to do is get it all together." Utah State defeat could clench season long goal By Charles Vaughn The Nebraska wrestling team will be attempting to fulfill a season-long goal when it hosts Utah State at the Bob Devaney Sports Center tonight at 8:30 pjn. The goal was to finish the season with a record of 184, but because South Dakota State cancelled a dual in Janu ary, the lluskers' goal now is to finish 174. "We thought that (184) would be the best record and 16-6 would be the worst we could be," Coach Bob Fehrs said. "Assuming we can win on Friday we will end up 174. I'm sure we would have had a victory over South Dakota State. So, assuming we win, we will have reached what we thought was a realistic, but pretty hard goal to meet," he added. Utah State has a record of 11-5, but three of their losses were at the hands of top 10 rated teams. "They are very good at 118- and 167-pounds. Those are two of their better kids," Fehrs said. "I don't think it's going to be super easy. We don't want to be over con fident, but we feel it should be a victory as long as we don't foul ourselves up." Early season injuries that riddled the team makes reaching their goal all that more impressive. "I think I really am surprised at the season because of the injuries," Fehrs stated. "We had four knee surgeries before the first meet was ever wrestled. When you start taking four possible starters out of your line-up that leaves quite a sizable hole. On top of that, our heavyweight "T-V v ....... tuaryi Meyer) was ineligible the tirst semester. A week after the Utah State dual, the Big Fight tourna ment begins featuring four teams rated in the tup 10. "Our goal in the Big Eight tournament will be to move up. There are five teams in the conference meet, because three schools don't have wrestling teams. Those five teams (including UNL) were rated in the previous rating at first, third, fifth, ninth and ourselves, 20th in the nation. So, obviously it's a rather tough league," Fehrs said. "We're kind of hoping, if we're healthy and doing the job we should be doing, that we can shorten the gap be tween ourselves and the leaders. That will mean we will have more qualifiers in the national tournament. The ultimate goal, of course, is to be a national champion " he added. Baseball team opens season with wins By Jeff Goodwin and Tom Prentiss The Husker baseball team opened the season Thursday by sweeping a doublcheader over Missouri Western 5-3 and 10-3. The Husker power attack was paced by right fielder Steve Stanicek who homered in each game. Stanicek's homer in the third inning of game one broke a 2-2 tie. Missouri Western's Isaac Brown doubled in the top of the sixth inning and was driven in on a single by Mike Musser to knot the score at 3-3. Nebraska went ahead in the sixth when Stanicek hit a liner to left fielder Clay Peacock that the umpire ruled a trap, and Stanicek beat the throw to second. First baseman Tim Smovich then hit a liner to center that Chuck Silver hobbled as Stanicek scored what was the eventual winning run. Sophomore Steve Gehrkc went the full seven innings for Nebraska. In game two. Husker Chris Chavez led off with a double which was followed by a walk to Mark Prior After Roger Hill I ouled out. ( have and Pryor executed a double steal. Missouri Western Hurler Jim Kucmarski then tossed a wild pitch scoring Chavez from third. Stanicek was struck out and Si.mvich reached on an error by the second baseman with Pryor scoring The lluskers scored a run a piece in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 50 lead Continued on Page 10
