Research program
has honored ten
In 1978 NU President Ronald Roskens established a
program called Awards for Outstanding Research and
Creative Activity. In the past three years 10 members
of the NU faculty have received the $1,000 awards.
The awards recognize excellence in work of national
significance done at the university.
Dr. Joseph Macek of the physics and astronomy de
partment received one of the awards in 1979 for his work
in atomic theory. Macek said he had been a part of the
research for 10 years and was instrumental in discovering
two new processes.
He said he found the emission of light from atoms
was modulated rather than continuous and electron capt
ure in atomic collision is more prevalent than originally
thought.
The research still is continuing, Macek said.
Faculty members receive awards by being nominated
and then considered by the selection committee, a group
of five professors from all NU campuses.
Macek said he was nominated and seconded by people
in his department.
UNL professor Dr. Paul Schach received an award in
1979 for his work in old Norse literature and the ethnic
languages in Pennsylvania and on the Great Plains, es
pecially the German dialects. He said he has written
several books and articles on the subjects and presently
edits the journal Scandinavian Studies.
Macek said cash awards are private contributions,
but he thinks most recipients apply them to their research.
