I found the editorial on
State Student Association
(SSA) in Friday's Daily
Nebraskan both misleading
and extremely biased.
I applaud those students
who have taken it upon
themselves to speak against
SSA. I feel it is totally un
justified to call this opposi
tion an 11th hour push. If
I were on this Core Com
mittee, I would welcome in
terest on SSA whether it be
pro or con. This opposition
should prove to both the
Core Committee and ASUN
that students do care how
their student fees are being
spent.
The Core Committee has
portrayed SSA as an al
mighty, flawless organiza
tion whose purpose is to
unite the 42,000 students of
this state under one
common goal. They have
said that SSA will make the
University of Nebraska
stronger and it will work for
our needs. I ask if this is
possible? flow can an SSA
work for our needs if our
own ASUN can't do that?
Wouldn't it be better to
make our own lobbying
group, the Government Lia
ison Committee, stronger
and have them work just for
us? In a time when most
schools are cutting their
budgets we are expanding
ours for new programs. Is
this necessary?
The answer to this ques
tion is for the students to
decide, not ASUN. The peti
tions only show one side of
the issue. The students
opposing SSA need to have
a means to express their
opinion. The only logical
and democratic thing to do
is to let the students vote on
a referendum in the March 4
ASUN elections. If the Core
Committee and ASUN think
this is something that
important, then they should
let the students vote.
The time is now for stu
dents to show concern. Ask
now for a referendum.
