thursday, february 12, 1981 daily nebraskan page 3 ASUN asked to put rec center question on ballot By Mary Louise Knapp Resolutions expressing condolences to the families and friends of three students who died from injuries sustained while leaving a weekend party passed unanimous ly at Wednesday's ASUN meeting. The resolutions stated the students of UNL and ASUN 'vish to express their re gret and sympathy" to the families, rela tives, and friends of Geri Foster, a UNL student. Peter J. Phelan, a Creighton stu dent, and Christopher R. Harries, another Creighton student. In other business, representatives from the UNL Recreation Advisory Board pre sented a slide show which compared rec reation facilities at other Big Light schools to those at UNL. Jim Brockmann. a member of the board, said he hoped the slide show would encourage student support for a proposed recreation center on City Campus. Brockmann said before any further action can be taken on plans for the recrea tion center, UNL students must demon strate their support for it. He encouraged students to write letters to Richard Armstrong, vice-chancellor for student affiars, in order to demonstrate their support. The board will present the slide show to campus organizations such as the Resi dence Hall Association and the lnterfrater nity Council at a later date, he said. Stan Campbell, advisor to the board, said if a recreation center is built, every effort will be made to keep costs to stu dents down. Campbell said the board has not inves tigated sources of funding, but soliciting donations from private foundations is a possibility. Campbell estimated the cost of a rec center building at $6 million. The board has not estimated the entire cost for the project, which includes equipment, he said. One of the most important things ASUN can do to support the rec center is to put the question of whether it should be built on the ballot in the March 4 elections, he said. "We would like a record turnout to vote." he said. Armstrong had indicated that even a normal turnout of voters in the ASUN elec tion (about 3,000 students) would give the necessary information on whether stu dents want a new rec center, Campbell said. If students approve the building of a rec center, the board would research costs, sources of funding, and building plans, he said. Students would be given another opportunity to vote on the issue next year if the issue is placed on the ballot this year. The entire project would take approxi mately 3Vi years, he said. In other business, Nette Nelson, chair man of the Government Liaison Commit tee, spoke about the committee's efforts to form a State Student Association. She said several questions concerning the purpose and structure of the proposed SSA had been asked by students. A pam phlet with those questions and answers is available in the GLC office, she said.
