May grads must apply for degrees
Students graduating May must apply for degrees no
later than 5 p.m. Tuesday or they will not graduate.
"If they don't apply for a degree, they aren't going to
get it," said Shirley Thomsen, assistant director of regi
stration and records.
Nursing and dental students must apply for their
degree through the NU Medical Center, but may attend
commencement at UNL or the medical center.
Likewose, social work and criminal justice students
must apply for a degree through UNO, and may attend
ceremonies in Omaha or Lincoln, Thomsen said.
"We really won't know until April 8 at 5 p.m. who is
going to graduate," she said. About 1,900 students are
expected to graduate.
Thomsen said she doesn't know how many applications
have been turned in so far, but said they "come in in
droves".
Once a student applies, his or her name is put on a list
by one of five clerks who handle graduation paperwork.
They update the list almost daily, subtracting students
who postpone graduation, Thomsen said.
Students who meet the deadline will receive a letter of
general information in mid-April about the commence
ment exercise.

day that a resolution supporting LB23, which would
allow minors to receive confidential professional
counseling from psychologists or psychiatrists, was
approved by the ASUN Senate.
The resolution failed by 5-15-6.
