44 A Sense of the Past" is the title of Friday's lecture.
Early independent movies will be presented. These were
produced by and for blacks, featuring the Scar of Shame,
The Birth of a Race, St. Louis Blues, and Black Shadow's
on a Silver Screen.
The Birth of a Race, was considered lost, yet the Pan
handle Plains Historical Museum in Canyon, Texas, found
one-third of the original nitrate negative. It has since been
restored and made into two prints, one of which will be
shown Friday at 3 p.m.
Saturday's lecture, "A Turnabout in Black Images:
World War J I," will focus on the transitional period in
Hollywood after the war. Clips from the following movies
will be featured: Casablanca, Lifeboat, Sahara, Stormy
Weather, and The Negro Soldier. Jammin' the Blues will
be shown in its entirety. The movie Casablanca will be
shown Monday, Feb. 9 and 7 and 9 p.m.
Cripps' final presentation Sunday, entitled "A New
Black Cinema Movement," will look at the current black

independent productions. The movies Street Corner Stor
ies, One, Bloods' Way, Four Women, and The Thieves will
be presented. The films, without Cripps' lecture, will also
be shown Sunday at 3 p.m.
Scar of Shame and St. Louis Blues, will be shown Sat
urday at 3 p.m. without Cripps' lecture.
All lectures will begin at 7 p.m., Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday. General admission is $2.50, $2.00 for senior
citizens and children. Those who wish to attend all of the
lecture sessions should tell the ushers so they can use their
ticket for every session.
Friday afternoon, Cripps will be interviewed by NETV
for a new series called Sheldon Film Theater Presents, in
which they will interview guest speakers visiting Lincoln.
The second part of this series will be a visit by Gordon
Parks Sr., maker of The Learning Tree, Shaft, and Lead
belly. The final part of the series will be a week-long
festival of films by and about native Americans. This
program is paid for through grants by the Nebraska Arts
Council and the Nebraska Committee for the Humanities.
