City clerk receives Northeast Radial petitions
By I). Eric Kircher
The president of a citizen's group Thursday presented
initiative petitions signed by about 5,200 Northeast
Kadial supporters to the Lincoln city clerk.
The petition calls for citizens, voting in a general
lection, to decide the radial's future unless the City
mind approves the radial before the April 7 primary
Section. 1 3
The Lincoln Citizens Association would prefer council
iiction, LCA President Willard Woodside said but he
added that he doesn't expect council approval.
In the past, "the council has refused to bite the bullet"

"I feel the voters are going to back us up" and vote for
the radial," Woodside said.
Northeast Lincoln's transportation problems have
been "swept under the rug for so many years." Woodside
said. "I think that it's time for the citizens to arise."
Several people from the 22nd Street corridor area-one
possible route ot the proposed radial signed the petition,
Woodside said.
The LCA will use paid advertisements before the
primary election to "clear up misconceptions" about the
radial, Woodside said. The LCA will pay for the ads with
money from organizations that supported the petition
drive, he said.
"I don't know how close they (city officials) look at
the petitions," when checking the eligibility of the signers,
Woodside said, hut he added that the petitions have more
than the required 4,1X8 valid signatures.
Woodside said he expected to turn in more signatures
earlier but the holidays and bad weather hampered
signature-gathering efforts.
The 9( petition copies plus one with 47 signatures
given to the clerk earlier present an ordinance to the
council requiring the city to build a radial using the 22nd
Street corridor.
The ordinance would prevent the sale of city-owned
land in the corridor between 27th and 48th streets.
