Baby-boom . . .
Continued from Page 4
Nor did Americans have to worry about the darker
implications of their consumption patterns at home. For
years we could afford to throw money at problems with
out consideration for the human failings greed, bigotry,
selfishness that fostered them.
Too few public figures ever hold constituents responsi
ble for their behavior. Nevertheless, Americans ought to
have learned from events of the last year that the rest of
the world isn't ready to let the United States revive the
old. rather inequitable arrangement.
The meaning of this new social order ought to be
amply clear to members of the baby-boom generation,
who may be inheriting an anachronistic legacy.
In the 1980 presidential campaign's least talked about
speech, Jerry Brown told a dozing Democratic National
Convention audience last August: "As a small minority of
the world's population, we must live by our wits, think
better and work harder ... We can invent new ways to
live better. We can learn to place quality above quantity
and caring above consumption."
Like Mike Mansfield, Brown has been warning Ameri
cans about the consequences of resting on one's laurels
and not adapting for the future. While bad habits may be
difficult to overcome, the sooner such modifications
occur the better, and the less painful the transition will
be.
And the less likely our hunger for personal gain and
worldly superiority will have left us in the cold 10 years
from now.
