Daily Nebraskan Photo By Tom Prentiss and Abby Maahs Steve Sample, NU's executive vice president for academic affairs, is a final ist for the presidency of Miami Univers ity in Oxford, Ohio. Jim Gardner, editor of The Miami Student, said Sample met witli the Miami University Board of Trustees Sunday night and left Oxford Wednesday after noon. Gardner said Sample is one of several finalists for the job, which pays up to $65,000, the highest salary allowed by Ohio law for state officials. Sample's current salary is $56,000. Sample, who came to NU in 1974 from the University of Illinois, could not be reached for comment. Gardner said the Board of Trustees received about 300 to 400 applications for the Miami presidency. It narrowed the group to a list of 12 to 15 to be interviewed. Sample is the first finalist to be a con firmed candidate by the university, said Gardner. Gardner said the Board of Trustees would not comment on any applicants until its February meeting. Jim Raglin, NU director of public af fairs, said Sample had given notice to NU president Ronald Roskens of his in terview with Miami officials. Sample has been a candidate for sever al university presidency positions in the past. Last September, he was a candidate for the presidency of Colorado State Uni versity in Ft. Collins, Colo. Sample with drew his name from consideration for that post. In February 1980, lie was a candidate for the presidency of Auburn University in Auburn, Ala., but withdrew his name from consideration. In 1978, Sample was a finalist for the presidency of the University of Okla homa. Raglin said Sample is highly regarded by all his fellow employees. "Steve Sample is an exceptional per son and deserves to head a university -and should," Raglin said. Sample also is dean of the Graduate College and a professor of electrical en gineering. He has received a bachelor of science degree, a master's degree and a Ph.D., all from the university of Illinois. Ten-week weight control program begins Feb. 16-17 The NU Health Center again will spon sor a weight control program this semest er, starting Feb. 16 and 17. The program will consist of weekly weigh-ins and class es, emphasizing exercise, good nutrition and helpful behavior patterns. Margaret Lager of the Mental Health Clinic said obesity is a major health prob lem on campus, but the results of the 10 week program have been encouraging. The diet used is based on the "ex change" plan, which interchanges differ ent foods in each food group that are in sii ilar cal rie brackets. The program is limited to people who are at least 15 per cent overweight, and stresses slow and steady weight loss. Interested persons should call the NU Health Center and make an appointment for a complete physical examination. Each candidate also will have an interview with a dietician to work out an individual program. The classes will meet in two groups ot 20 people each, one class meeting on Mondays, and one class on Tuesdays, both from 4 to 5 p jn. A follow-up class will be for people who have taken the original program and wish lo lose more weight. A time lias not been set for this group, but those interes ted should call Lager.
