Edward Bruner. The chorus is open to community members and UNL students. The ensemble performs the great master works of choral literature writtten for choral and orchestra. entertainment notes This semester the University Chorus will be performing Haydn's Mass in Time of War with the university symphony orchest ra. The work was chosen not only for its obvious musical qualities but also because of its historical and political connection with the Iranian hostage situation. This Haydn Mass was composed in Sept ember of 1796 for the birthday celebration of the wife of Nicholas II. Through it Haydn was able to protest the actions of Napoleon and his armies that were march ing toward Austria. The Imperial Capital was preparing for the inevitable battle, and Haydn pictorially represented this by the inclusion of distant canon fire in the final movement of the work. The work was chosen by Bruner specifically as a way of making a positive statement concerning the plight of the U.S. hostages in Iran. The first meeting of the ensemble will be January 19,1981, in Room 119 West brook Music Building from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Community members and university students interested in participation are en couraged to audition January 12,13, and 14 in Room 220 Westbrook Music Building on City Campus. Today will be the only audition day, with evening hours from 7:30 - 9:30. All other times are scheduled during the day. The Lincoln Friends of Chamber Music will present a performance by the Dorian Wind Quartet at the Sheldon Gallery at 8 p.m., Saturday, January 17. Renowned for their marvelous team work, beautifully controlled dynamics and brilliance, the Dorian Wind Quartet has be come one of the leading American chamber ensembles, having inspired many contemp orary composers to write for winds. The program will feature one such work, the Opus Number Zoo, written for the Dorian by Luciano Berio. This children's play for winds, with each movement of the piece written to a verse by Rhoda Levine, is dramatically narrated by various quintet members as the others play the music. Kennedy's Children . . . Continued from Page 8 Ronda Esquivefs Carla possesses all the petulant vulnerability of her character. "There are 50 million people just like me, wanting to be the next Marilyn Mon roe. . . she says, "automated undulating eager meat." She is a character without an identity of her own, and seeking one that is no longer valued. Kennedy':, Children is more applicable than we know. We sit complacently having never been damned, denied or betrayed by a generation. Yet Patrick asks how many of us are warped by events that loom just as monumentally in our lives as war How many of us pattern after someone else, and, as a result, are incomplete? How many of us take our purpose from the world around us and with its death can only live in the past? Kennedy 's Children is being performed January 16 and 17 at the Lincoln Com munity Playhouse. Mickey Continued from Page 8 "But apparently somebody did. " I said. "Yup. Somebody over at ABC thought up "Those Am azing Animals." An hour of nonstop cuteness." "Animals are animals," I said, "and you both had them. What did "Those Amazing Animals" have that "Disney" didn't have?" Mickey Mouse blew a smoke ring. "Animals are ani mals, I agree. But with animals on television come narrat ors, and not all narrators are alike. They had Priscilla Pres ley. We had Ludwig Von Drake. Now Ludwig is a very engaging old guy, and as good a comic actor as you'll find anywhere, but you don't have to be a genius to see how he stacks up against Priscilla Presley." "But what about the educational value of the show? Weren't parents upset when "Disney" went off the air?" "Probably didn't even notice. And as for that educat ional value you were talking anout, nothing will kill you faster in the ratings game than being labeled an education al show. An educational show is one that everybody else is watching." "I suppose you're right there. Have you got any plans for the future?" "Nothing definite. I'll probably take it easy for awhile, hit the talk shows, do a couple of celebrity pro-am golf tournaments. I do have a committment to perform at the Inauguration for President Reagan." "No kidding. I'm supposed to go there as a reporter." "It's a small world after all. See you there." n Ready to teach home nursing, first aid, parenting, child care, water safety, CPR.
