and a member of the UNL
Students' Resistance Organi
zation said he had spoken to
only two prospective regi
strants. "One registered under
protest, and the other went
home to think it over," he
said.
Fverett Strough, post
)ffice representative for the
Selective Service, said the
olunteers for Nebraskans
for Peace did not give the
post office any problems
ind were allowed to stand
m the lobbies to distribute
leaflets.
"All we do is provide the
registration forms and answ
er questions about filling
them in. The men are re
quired to fill in their social
security numbers, and if we
notice it's missing, we point
it out. But if they refuse we
don't argue. That's between
them and the Selective Ser
vice.
Although the Selective
Service does not allow the
post office to release infor
mation on the numbers of
men registering or register
ing under protest. Strough
did say that tew had regist
ered under protest.
Young men opposed to
registration but going
through the process were
given stickers by protest
volunteers to attach to their
forms. The stickers said
they were registering under
protest.
Johnson said the men
would not be penalized for
registering under protest,
but that they could face up
to five years in a federal
prison and up to a $10,000
fine for refusing to register.
Those who turn 18 in
1981 will be required to
register within 30 days of
their birthday..

Another volunteer with
Nebraskans for Peace, Jim
Anderson, says the group's
main objection to registra
tion is that in this country,
registration has almost al
ways been followed by a
draft for war.
"And Americans need to
wake up to the fact that the
only way our species can
continue to exist is to
co-exist peacefully. I fed
since I am aware of the
threat of (nuclear) war, it's
my duty to inform those
won aren't."
Not all 18-year-olds were
influenced by this opinion.
Ernie Spidell, 18, from
Cortland, said he registered
under protest, opposing the
draft but not necessarily
war.
"If I have to go, sure I'll
do it. Better to go out and
fight than to wait until the
bombs drop here. Still, it
had better be for a damn
good reason."
Three University Health
Center Board positions are
open. Students interested in
serving on this board may

115 Nebraska Union. Last
