page 12 daily nebraskan monday, january 12, 1981 Chambers bill would pay Husker football play ers Because of the large amount of money that the UNL football team brings to the university and the state, foot ball players should be paid for their work, according to Omaha Sen. Ernest Chambers. Chambers told The Associated Press last week that the Cornhuskers create "hundreds of thousands of dollars" and should therefore be considered state employees. He said he will introduce a bill this week to include football players on the state payroll. Chambers said he hasn't determined how much players should be paid, but he said it could be a minimum wage. Chambers also told the AP that "like any other employee who performs above that which is expected of him," outstanding members should be eligible for merit pay or bonuses. According to Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne, Chamb ers' proposal is illegal. Saying that he had "no comment on anything he (Chambers) does," Osborne said that putting the players on the payroll is "something that can't be done." Chambers said he expects the bill to pass, adding that public hearings on the bill will be as important as the bill itself. The hearings will call to attention the faults in the football program, Chambers said. Too much emphasis is put on the bodies of football players, he said, while their mental, social and emotional growth are neglected. Chambers said problems in the athletic program are not exclusively Nebraska's, however. He said that if he were a senator in Oklahoma-where Sooner fever is similar to Big Red fever-he would probably sponsor similar legislation. However, if he lived in Oklahoma, Chambers said, he wouldn't have to worry about racism within the football program.
