tuesday, december 9, 1980 daily nebraskan page 5 to fthe editor I he editorial in the Dec. 5 Dailv Nebraskan brought up some very good points concerning the Nebraska Union's hope of taking over ownership of the Uni versity Bookstore. Mostly, what has been heard is from two sides, one from the administrative point of view and the one from the Union, with the feeling there have been some 23,000 students and faculty left out with no say in this situation. A suggestion is running the bookstore as a cooperative, so anyone who is a student or a faculty member has a say in the opera tions of the bookstore. The following is an example how the University of Texas at Austin runs its bookstore in the cooperative manner. It is a non-profit corporation operated for the distribution of educational and supply needs of their members. All faculty, staff and. of course, students, are members. The co-op would not have any indivi dual owners or stock holders although, in a sense as a member, we would he the owners and stock holders. Operating policies and practices would be set up by a board of directors, which would be made up of four faculty members selected by the university chancellor and would each serve a four-year term, four student members elected by the student body who would serve a two-year term, and two employee members elected by the co-op employees who would serve a one year term. Board meetings could be well announced in the I)N or across campus. 'Vhen profits are then assessed at the end of each fiscal year, some money is left over for operating expenses, financing in creased inventories, and replacement of, or additions to, assets. All profits beyond those costs are distributed to the members (students, faculty and staff) in the form of a patronage refund. Vi-.wh refund is based upon how much business each individual has conducted in the stoie through the year. It is then the function of that board to determine how much of a percentage this rebate would be. There would be a president entrusted to the day-to-day operations of the co-op. It would get rid of this so-called 60 percent returned when now we are already paying back that percentage because of the stu dents' continual need for books, clothes, school supplies, etc. A cooperative at least would serve the students first and not some outsiders who would like to make a few bucks off the stu dents and then run off counting the dollars they made. Ken I la via t Sophomore, undeclared Country competition As Operations Director at Super Country KSRD (legally licensed to Seward Lincoln), I was relieved to read KBHL's Dave Graupner's comments in the Dec. 3 Daily Nebraskan. The article was brought to my attention by one of our many listeners at UNL. Apparently, neither author Bob Crisler, nor our friends at KB1IL were aware that Super Country KSRD has been programming country for over two months. According to our listener and advertiser response in Lincoln, you guys must be the last to know. Part of our success is due to the fact that we have the utmost respect for KECK, KBHL, and every other station competing with us in eastern Nebraska. It's refreshing to know KSRD won't have to expect that same competitive instinct from KBHL, since they "don't sec any direct competi ion in the market." Boy. Maybe they'll let us all know their secret. We have to work like crazy . . . and we have 100,000 watts of power, compared to their 3,000. On behalf of the established country stations in Lincoln, we welcome KBHL to their newly-found world of country music. I invite Bob Crisler and KBHL to tune us in at FM 97. We'll try like hell to be "sophis ticated" enough for you. Just a thought, concerning the call letter handle: How about "Keep Being Highly Locquacious?" Warren Krcch Operations Director Gene notion absurd While I thank you for printing my letter in the Dec. 5 Daily Nebraskan, 1 must make an important correction and add a comment. In my letter, I alleged that to use abor tion as a birth control technique to adjust to an unfair distribution of wealth and power is a Malthusian and opportunistic (not an opportunity) accommodation to class, race and sex oppression. (Incidental ly. I maintain that a pregnant woman has the right to defend her life from a fetus whose development jeopardizes her exis tence.) I find it absurd that Ms. Llliott tries to justify abortion by arguing that human genes are closely relative to chimpanzees. Docs she suggest that aborting chimpanzees at will is thus morally palatable? Does the fabric of life deserve any basic respect? On the other hand, surely Ms. Elliott can distinguish between chimpanzee fetus es becoming born chimpanzees and human fetuses being delivered into the world as humans? Come now, Ms. Elliott, let's stop mon keying around in a crucial moral and scien tific issue and face up to the question as to what abortions are justified and which ones are not.
