page 1 2 daily ncbraskan monday, december 1, 1980 Wind power . . . Continued from Page 2 The generator is a four-foot pipe with an electric arc in side. The air in the pipe is ionized by the arc, Splinter said, then re-combines to form nitrous oxide. The nitrous oxide flows through limestone and emerges as calcium ni trate, a fertilizer. The calcium nitrate then is applied to a cornfield at the Mead laboratory. While this fertilizer is not as cheap as the commercial variety now available, Splinter said that con tinuing research may make the system more economical. The nitrogen generator is an evolved version of a pro cess that has been around since the 1920s, Splinter said, but recently was resurrected by researchers at Ohio's Kettering Foundation. The experimental model at Mead is the only such gen erator currently operating in the United States, he said, although similar generators are planned for Hawaii and Nevada. An extension of the energy system-incorporating wind turbine, an irrigation device, and a nitrogen generator could include some means of using the heat that comes off the generator, which Martin said runs hot enough to boil water. He said the heat could be used in the farm home or could be used to make steam. It also might be used for drying grain or other purposes. Economic factors currently make the wind turbine for irrigation or the nitrogen generator system, when consid ered by themselves, financially questionable, Martin cau tioned. He added, however, that a combination system, coupled with increasing costs for electric power and fossil fuels, may make such a system cost effective someday. "If you could justify the wind turbine on the basis of of providing power for irrigation as well as for the nitro gen generator, then the system might well become popu lar," he said. 5 gallon aquarium with accessories; pump, hood, light, gravel, artificial plants, filter.
