Andrew Young to deliver MUN keynote speech

Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations
Andrew Young, has been named the keynote speaker at
UNL's 14th annual Model United Nations conference, set
for Feb. 11 through 14, according to MUN Chairman
Steve Arkfeld.
Arkfeld said the conference, sponsored by the Univer
sity Program Council, simulates the general assembly,
security council, economic and social council, and inter
national court of justice of the United Nations. Its 500
delegates debate international affairs.
This will be the second year in a row that the interna
tional court of justice, which is unique to UNL's model,
will be conducted, Arkfeld said. He said that this added
feature has increased the response from other universities.
Arkfeld said Young will be the only speaker at the con
ference, which starts Wednesday night and continues
every day and evening until Saturday night. He added that
after Young's speech Wednesday night, a reception will be
held for the former ambassador and the delegates.
Young's trip to Nebraska, Arkfeld said, is sponsored by
the Model United Nations committee, Talks and Topics,
the chancellor's office, the UPC-Culture Center's enter
tainment and black special events committees, the College
of Arts and Sciences, and the faculty convocations com
mittee. Arkfeld said Young also will speak to international
relations students in a question-answer period during his
stay.
Because UNL's model has grown in quality and respect
throughout the Midwest, Arkfeld said, "We have been able
to attract students from other states, which also increases
participation from UNL students."
Arkfeld said some universities have student organiza
tions which send students to the other 100 MUN confer
ences throughout the nation, but UNL students who wish
to go to other schools' conferences must pay their own
way.
Students who are interested in being delegates should
turn in applications in room 200 Nebraska Union by Nov.
