page 2 daily nebraskan friday, november 14, 1980 Three-day fair result of effort to attract students By Erin Whitlock Several companies have found a new way to promote their products by having a fair. Expo America, coming to Lincoln this Monday through Wednesday, will be a major advertising effort by several national companies. As many as 9,000 people are expected to attend the three-day event at the Lincoln Hilton. Events include games, contests and band concerts each night. Everything is free. The fair was called a very sophisticated professional carnival by Judy Burgh, representative of Expo America, Inc. The fair will be open from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. all three days. A battle of the bands will run from 9 to midnight each night. The companies are financing the event. Burgh said the companies in Expo feel that because of the demands put on college students, students have little time for radio, TV or newspapers. The companies think that by sponsoring Expo they can reach a greater number of students more effectively. Expo America is an extension of a major marketing show held each year in Daytona, Fla., Burgh said. The show, which began six years ago, was first held in con junction with Playboy. After three years, Alan Swift, president of Expo America, Inc., started running the fair alone . Because the sponsors of Expo were pleased with the results of the past six years they decided to try it on a national basis. As a result, Expo America is on the road this year for the first time. The national tour, which started in October, will have Expo traveling to 1 6 universities and colleges in the U.S. Expo has already been to Penn State and Florida since the tour began. If the tour is successful it may be expanded to more colleges and universities in the years to come, said Burgh. The main idea behind Expo, Burgh said, is to develop "positive product awareness" on the part of the consum ers, through the different games and contests.
