thursday, november 13, 1980 daily nebraskan page 3 ASUN endorses Crib fast food conversion plan By Patti Gallagher ASUN endorsed renovating the Crib in the Nebraska Union into a fast food service by a 234-3 vote Wednesday night at the ASUN meeting. Members ot the Nebraska Union Board presented the crib renovation proposal to the senate. The proposal, part of the union board's five-year-plan for union renovations, outlined the goals and procedures for changing the Crib into a fast food service. Major reasons supporting the conversion proposal in clude continued revenue losses in union food services, and increased competition with both downtown restaur ants and other food services within the union. The proposal goes before the NU Board of Regents at their next meeting, Nov. 2 1 . According to Union Director Daryl Swanson, the menu for the fast food service has not yet been decided. It will not, however, be solely a hamburger and fries menu, in efforts to offer students as wide a variety as possible. In other business, the senate passed a bill supporting the general run-off system for the ASUN elections. The system passed is similar to that of presidential elections, in that if a candidate is not elected by a majority in the first vote, a run-off vote is taken. The passage of the general runoff system came after an attempt to override last week's presidential veto on the integrated general runoff system. The senate passed the IGR two weeks ago; ASUN President Renee Wessels vetoed the bill. According to Wessels, the IGR system is too compli cated and confusing. This confusion led to controversial elections for the past two years, and damaged the cred ibility of ASUN. Aripoli elected to office Don Aripoli, director of UNL's Scholarships and Financial Aids office, has been elected to the College Scholarship Service Council of the College Board. Aripoli's term will ever the period 1980 to 1983. The College Board is a New York-based nonprofit educational association with a membership of over 2,500 colleges, universities, schools, school systems and associa tions. CSS Council responsibilities include planning and eval uating College Scholarship Service activities, setting poli cies procedures and standards of financial need analysis; and assisting in the counseling and training of financial aid officers. The CSS Council also suggests research and studies for governmental and other agencies in the area of student financial need. Wessels therefore endorsed the general runoff to en sure smoother operations in this spring's elections, noting that it is used successfully on other college campuses. Electoral comission chairman Jeff Terp informed the senate that the general run-off system was proposed and endorsed by the commission in September, before debate began on alternative systems. The bill specifies that the senate submit guidelines and rules of procedures for the general run-off system by Dec. 1. In committee reports, chairman of Budget and Fees Eric Torrison announced that the committee killed a bill proposing the elimination of student fees for the Daily Nebraskan. The bill, discussed last week, was aimed at making the newspaper completely autonomous by remov ing the 7 percent student fee support from the budget. In other action, the senate endorsed the right of the University Program Council to bring speakers of their choice to campus. UPC committee member Deresa Oliver spoke to the senate about Nelson Johnson's appearance at UNL, scheduled for Nov. 19. She said that administrative persons have failed to approve allocation of money for the speech because of Nelson's background in political activism. The senate resolution specified support of allocating the $432 fee for Nelson's appearance.
