Steels plans to spend offseason
playing his piano for the public
By Tad Stryker
This winter after the Husker football season ends,
junior wingback Anthony "Slick" Steels plans to return in
earnest to his nimble-fingers routine, and once again
exercise his vocal chords.
Steels performed as a singer and piano player last
winter, backed by his band, First Class. They have broken
up since then, but Steels said he's now planning on form
ing a trio.
When the trio is complete. Steels said the group will
perform at Walpurgisnacht, the UNL winter festival,
where Steels made his last performance with First Class.
"I've got my drummer, but we're still looking for a
bass," Steels said. The drummer is Paul Hansen, a UNL
senior from Grand Island, with whom Steels said he has
worked many times before.
The pair started working together two years ago, Steels
said, when he heard Hansen playing in the dormitory.
"We usually get together in the off-season; we play in
wedding receptions and stuff like that. We do a lot of it
just for fun, though," Steels said.
Mostly, his music has been only a hobby, he said.
Steels has had almost no musical training, only a few
music-reading lessons last summer.
"1 didn't learn much," Steels admitted. He still plays
and sings by ear, picking up songs played on the radio and
'Satisfying' season ends
for soccer club with loss
Although the UNL Soc
cer Club lost its final game
of the season to Kansas
State 1-0, Soccer Club Pres
ident Phillip Strevey is satis
fied with the season's out
come. The Nov. 9 loss
brought the final record to
1 1 wins and five losses.
Strevey said UNL lost
the game because they
didn't make short enough
passes in the first half.
Strevey had scored a goal,
but it was called back be
cause UNL was offsides.
"We really outplayed
them," Strevey said. "They
didn't score until the last
minute of the game."
The team is getting ready
fro the Invitational Tourna
ment at Manhattan, Kan. on
Nov. 15. Six teams will be
participating in the event.
Strevey feels optimistic
about the tournament. He
said that although Kansas
State will be in a different
division from UNL, the two
will probably meet in the
finals.
"I think we can beat
them because we're the bet
ter team," Strevey said.
"We're on the verge of
being Big Eight champs
it's just that we've had a
couple of bad breaks. We'll
see how it goes in the
spring."
Strevey said that the
team's goal was to go un
defeated for this season, but
added that all of the losses
were only by one goal.

practicing them on the piano in his apartment.
"I'm working on a few songs myself, or at least I've
laid up a couple," he said. "I don't know enough about
songwriting to do it right, but I'm getting better."
Steels said he is improving in other areas as well.
"I see myself learning more and more every time I sit
down at the piano," he said. "Now I feel more comfort
able with the piano and my voice. It's just something I
really enjoy."
The wingback says he has no big plans for himself in
music, at least not for awhile.
"Football and school come first, and they're tough
enough," he said. "Sure, I would like to make records and
give concerts. It's a dream of mine, but it's quite a ways
off."
