The recommendation says that the stu dent press guidelines should be amended to provide for the separation and to give the chancellor "an increased role in final approval" of those who will serve on the Publications Board. The chancellor also should be the liaison between the Publications Board and the re gents, the recommendation says. The separation recommendation came about because former student government representatives currently serve on the Pub lications Board, including last year's ASUN President Bud Cuca and First Vice Presi dent Hubert Brown, a university spokes man said: A committee to study and prepare the proposed amendments also was appointed by the regents. On the committee are Neale Copple, dean of the UNL School of Jour nalism; Mark Bowen, chairman of the Publications Board; Hugh Cowdin, UNO GENCO PRE A Touch of Class... The Publications Board passed a resolu tion saying that Essex and Brown used poor judgment handling the letter, in Sep. tember, but some regents said the board should have taken more action against the students and decided the duties and mem bership of the fcoard should be examined. The regents apparently have dropped their demand that more disciplinary action be taken against Essex and Brown. "What has happened in the past has happened. It is time to let bygones be by. gones," Regent Robert Koefoot of Grand Island said. The regents accepted the recommenda tions with little discussion and seemed not to notice five students in the back ol Regents Hall carrying signs which read: "Support those who expose racism." Field lab is given money for farm study The NU Field Labora tory at Mead, has been a warded about SI million for the creation of an Integrat ed Energy Farm that will be used to develop a petroleum -independant farm opera tion within 4 years, said uni verity officials Friday. According to an Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources press release, UNL is one of nine appli cants that applied and re ceived contracts from the Department of Energy for the creation of an integrated energy farm. Institute officials said the Department of Energy con tract money will finance more than half of the total cost of the farm. Officials said remaining funds would come from the UNL agri cultural engineering de partment. IANR officials said the goal is to operate a farm without the use of any pe troleum fuels or lubricants. Officials said the DOE con tract will bring a usable so lution toward petroleum in dependance in farming, not a theoretical one. William Splinter agri culture engineering depart ment chairman and project director, said the main ob jective is to make it eco nomical. Splinter said the energy farm will rely upon existing photovolatic solar arrays ;o provide part of electrical requirements for the farms. Other areas will utilize certain crop bio-mass residue to be made into fertilizer.
