fridoy, October 17. 1930 page 10 daily nebraskan Osborne says Redwine will be available if needled ByTadStryker Saturday the Huskers will be the hold ers of one of the most envied insurance policies in college football: Jarvis Redwine. Redwine, according to Head Coach Tom Osborne, will be available for duty against Oklahoma State, but probably only in an emergency. "Jarvis was able to move pretty well in practice today," Osborne said Thurs day. The team worked out without pads, so it was hard to get a true reading of Red wine's mob flity. "We could play him if we need him," Osborne said. "WeH suit him up. Well try not to use him if we can help it." There are doubts as to whether Red wine is mentally ready to play, Osborne said. "1 talked to him about it today," Osborne said. "He has mixed feelings about playing, and that concerns me some. "If he's not ready, we don't want to use him," Osbome continued. "Well just have to see. 1 don't want to put him out there unless he feels he can go." If this year's homecoming game goes at all like the last three Husker-Cow-boy clashes in Lincoln, Redwine could be a busy back. Oklahoma State has a knack of extending Nebraska to its limits in Memor ial Stadium before losing 7-3 (1974), 14 10 (1976) and 22-14 (1978). Osborne thinks that this time around should be no different. "1 don't think well have an easy time of it Saturday," he said. Practice did not go very well, Thurs day, Osborne said. He said he was con cerned about his team's overall effort during the Thursday workout. "Hopefully, it's just a natural letdown that comes when you practice without pads," he said. "I think they'll be ready to go." Injuries, which were a worry last week, are not as serious this week. Except for Redwine, the Huskers are healthy. Sopho more center Dave Rimington's sprained ankle had healed to the point where he was able to practice at full speed Thursday. Defensive backs Ric Lindquist and Andy Means are also at full speed. The Cowboys will be in less than top condition, with their first-string quarter back, John Doerner, recovering from a broken leg. Osborne said he thought OSU nose guard Steve Heinzler will likely miss the game. Statistically, the Huskers, with their top-ranked offense and second-ranked de fense, have a big edge over OSU. Still, the Huskers are hoping their OSU history does not repeat itself. If it does, and the game goes down to the wire, the Big Red's big play man may be forced to make an early comeback at a time when Osborne hopes his insurance policy could mature another week. 1 T T I , . t- .... 'For real' Buffalo Bills picked to down Miami Seattle at the New York Jets: There won't be any de fense in this contest, but the Jets can run ann pass, while the Seahawks can only pass. The Jets by eight. in carlson Minnesota at Cincinnati: No one in their right mind would pick the Vikings at Cincinnati, especially after the Bengals just finished defeating Pittsburgh for the second time in three weeks, well, I'm betting that Cincinnati will experience too much of a let down to remember who they're playing Sunday. Minnesota by three. Dallas at Philadelphia: While Philadelphia showed that they can still win on a bad day, all Dallas proved last week is that they can score 60 points on a team (San Francisco) that has only one bright spot: the tight end's wife is Miss Universe. The Eagles by seven. Buffalo at Miami: Buffalo is for real this year, but they have never won at the Orange Bowl. On the other hand, Miami has fattened it so so record on NFC oppon ents. Buffalo is settled at QB and Miami is not, so the nod goes to the Bills. Buffalo by four. St. Louis at Washington: The Redskins are better than their 1-5 record indicates, and theyll have to per form well in front of their home-town crowd, after Mon day night's TV toss. The Redskins by five. Kansas City at Denver: The boys in Las Vegas have set the points unusually low on this game, so look for ev eryone and his mother to bet on Denver. Fra going to chicken out and take the Broncos, but don't be surprised if the Chiefs pull this one out. Denver by two. Continued on Page 1 1 Win to put Huskers a step closer to Miami Of all the teams in the Big Eight, Oklahoma State has to be the biggest disappointment. Before the season started, the Cowboys were talking the Orange Bowl. Now they're just talk ing about winning a game. few? 88cOj1 The Cowboys big problem has been a lack of consistency. They have played very well at times. They led Missouri and were tied with Arkansas at halftime - but havent been able to play four quarters of good football. OSU offense has been sluggish for most of the year. Jim Traber is the quarterback for OSU. He replaced John Doemer, who broke his ankle early in the season. Houston Nutt (what a great name) backs up Traber. Some people see this game as a rout for the Huskers. I think Nebraska will win handily but it should be closer than last week. For some reason OSU always plays better in Lincoln than in Stillwater. The Huskers take another step toward the Orange Bowl: Nenr aska31 OSU 14. Colorado at Missouri. One of the few things Woody Hayes said Moday night that made any sense was that, in a league known for cheating, Nebraska has managed to stay clean and still win. Woody didn't mention any names, but he might have been talking about that team in Boulder. The big mystery is not why Color ado forked over all that money, but why they forked it over to Chuck Fair banks. Fairbanks is simply not that good a coach. Ask anyone from Okla homa, Boston or Colorado. If they don't agree, you've asked the wrong person. The only problem Missouri might have in this game is that they might be looking ahead to Nebraska, two weeks from now. Of course, Colorado is also looking ahead-to Christmas vacation. The Tigers romp: Missouri 38, Colorado Alabama at Tennessee. The Volun teers could easily be ranked in the top five or six with a little hick. They lost by a total of four points to USC and Georgia. They should give Alabama a tough game, at least for awhile. Alabama got a scare from Rut gers last week. That should help them to take this game more seriously. The fact that this game is on television wont hurt either. The idiot box seems to in spire the Tide to new heights. Alabama hasnt lost a SEC game since Georgia beat them in 1976. This could be the week but it's not likely Alabama 23 Tennessee 14.
