About The daily Nebraskan. ([Lincoln, Neb.) 1901-current | View Entire Issue (Oct. 14, 1980)
tuesday, October 14, 1980 daily nebraskan pageS Anyone who has read a couple of Beth Headrick's columns knows that one of her aims this year will be the promotion of liberal abortion laws. Her column in the Oct. 8 Daily Nebraskan ("Fundamentalists threaten women's choices) again recites pro-abortion doctrine for the third or fourth time this year. Basically, it is the "stopping abortion will establish a state religion" argument, only now we find that it is fundamental ism that will be established rather than Roman Catholicism, as used to be asserted. The article serves up such a mess of con fused arguments and half truths that one hardly knows where to begin to respond to it. So I will limit this letter to what she says about R. Benjamin Garrison. Garrison, she says, favors abortion be cause he has counselled unhappy mothers who didn't want any more children. No one is unaware that the poor have many problems. The question is about how they should be remedied. Suppose, for example, that a woman came to Garrison who was without a hus band and who was not pregnant, but who had children aged five, three and one years. She tearfully explains that she is nearly broke, life is stressful, and she feels like she can't propoerly care for her children. She says she feels like she could care for two of them , but not all three. In such a case, we may hope, Garrison would not suggest that the one-year-old be killed and begin calling for the legalization of a woman's right to kill her children. He would (a) suggest that one or more of the children be adopted out or, (b) give the woman more money or a better job, or (c) provide her with counseling to help her cope, or some combination of the three. Why can't the same be done in place of abortion? The debate is not over whether women and the poor have problems. It is over what we will do to remedy the problems. Killing someone, though simple, is seldom if ever a good remedy. Terry J. Christlieb Graduate College Message not condemnation I am growing increasingly distressed by those who stand in front of the Nebraska Union antagonizing and condemning stu dents in the name of Christianity. The message of Christianity is not one of con demnation; it is one of love and forgive ness. Jesus himself said, "For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through Him." (John 3: 16) We should not dwell on the bad news, but rather the Gospel, which is the good news. Christ died to save us from con demnation and- rose again so that we may live with Him eternally. God offers forgive ness and abundant life to those who believe in Christ. This is a message of hope, not judgment. Marcia Warkentin Advertising Junior Fire up, Huskers On Oct. 4, under a brilliant blue sky, our beloved Huskers went to the turf to play football. We fans saw them play their hearts out, never giving up as they tried to win for 76,000 dizzy fans. We witnessed a comeback capable only of Nebraska. And although the score didn't run in our favor, the Huskers were still winners. As a student from west of Scottsbluff, I had my first taste of seeing the Huskers defeated in person. It hurt terribly, but then everyone else felt the same way. I was in the midst of the third largest city in the state, yelling my lungs out for my beloved Huskers. I was on my feet like the rest of the fans. Sure, high school teams have their moments, but nothing could compare to an entire state yelling, "Go Big Red" over and over, and clapping, screaming and praying for that one play that would put us in the end zone. Nebraska has the most courageous team in the world. The Huskers always manage to find deep within themselves that little extra to keep coming back. Hie fans, too, stick together, whether on this end of the state of on the other. The season is not over vet. We still have to win the Big Eight, attend the Orange Bowl, win the Hcisman, and most of all, beat Oklahoma. Our shot for the national championship is not gone. Nebraska is a comeback team and if there's even the littlest hole, they will break through and score. So, let's stay with our team and keep cheering them on. A 10-1 season won't even receive a second glance when we become No. 1 and win the Big Eight. Come on, Huskers, the season is young and there's a lot of football to play. GO BIG RED. Kimmie Blackburn Animal Science Senior Editorial criticized In regard to Eric Warp's editorial on Sept. 30, 1 think his article warrants a few comments. First of all, I think Warp's com ments on Jerry Sellentin's qualifications for legislator were biased. Not only has Jerry Sellentine worked hard for his pre sent position, but by holding that position, he has become a member of the work class. Can Fowler say the same? What better way is there to understand and acknowledge the needs of the work class than to be a member? Secondly, Eric Warp asked how Jerry Selientin can help this university one bit. Sellentin has been a professor at NU for the last two years, and has received his bachelor's, master's and PhD. degrees from NU. This indicates to me that Jerry Sellentin will be pulling for NU just as much, if not more, than Fowler. Who cares if we have to wait two, three, or even four years; we've already waited eight with Fowler. As far as the Daily Nebraskan . having slanted coverage, I agree with Bud Cuca. The way I have interpreted journalism is that it is fine for a newspaper to endorse a candidate but it is also good journalistic practice to give equal coverage to the other candidates running. I think Sellentin is the better candidate and I think everyone else on this campus should have the opportun ity to decide which candidate is best by viewing all the facts about both candidates. Let's not excuse this newspaper for not printing it "like it really is." I'm sure if the Daily Nebraskan had factual data so bad that Sellentin could no longer show his face, they would have printed it. In fact, wouldn't it be their responsibility to do so? Eric Warp asked many questions about Sellentin. Maybe he could answer these questions about Fowler. If Fowler is doing so much for UNL and its student body, why has UNIX's budget gone down 10.2 percent relative to other campuses? If Fowler has so much clout, why did only one out of the nine pieces of legislation that he introduced pass? More funda mentally, why would someone that has been a state legislator for eight years not have enough pride to run on his past record and the issues of the election? Vickie Eigenberg Business Senior Homecoming I strongly protest the lack of publicity about the homecoming royalty candidates in Neihardt and other residence halls. The organizers of the homecoming festivities have totally failed to provide any informa tion on the candidates to the residence hall community. This amounts to gross negli gence of the highest order. While regretting this unfortunate, and hopefully unintentional incident, I support the demand by President Corkie Kompost of the Residence Hall Association to post pone the homecoming royalty election until Friday. In the mean time, the home coming committee should spare no effort in giving the candidates the publicity they deserve throughout the entire campus community. Gerlad M. Woo, President Neihardt Resident Center Postpone election I would like to express my concern about the validity of the 1980 home coming election, since a voting block of over 5,000 students has been ignored. The Residence Hall Association and the respective hall governments have not been notified about the Homecoming election. There has been little or no publicity dist ributed. It would seem to me that since students living in the residence halls com prise about 25 percent of the university population, their vote could be a deciding factor in determining the outcome of the election. I believe that some sort of notifi cation should have been made in order to allow hall residents time to consider their choices. Because most, if not all, residence hall students have not been informed about the election, I call for its postponement until Thursday to give students ample time to make an informed choice.
