Fewer turnovers, penalties are Musker priorities
By Tad Strykcr
For the most part, the Cornhuskers
played with good intensity last Saturday,
Head Coach Tom Osborne said at the Extra
Point Gub luncheon Monday. But one let
down proved to be crucial in the Huskers
18-14 loss to Florida State, he said.
The letdown occurred with about six
minutes to play in the second quarter, dur-

ing'a drive that enabled Florida State to
cut the Huskers' lead to 14-3 at the half.
'They got a little feeling that they
could get back into the game, and then we
spent the whole third period encouraging
them "Osborne said.
Osborne faced a capacity crowd with a
mixtureof humor, disappointment, insight
and optimism.
Osborne's introduction brought a stand
ing ovation from the crowd. In response
he joked: "Maybe you all stood because
you're surprised I even showed up today.
"You've been reading about hpw Notre
Dame wants me to be their coach next
year," he said. "Well, yesterday they called
me up and said, 'Forget it. "
In no way does he feel ashamed of his
players, Osborne said.
"I told the players that I didn't want
them to feel ashamed of themselves,
either," osborne said. ""In athletics,the
only time you should feel ashamed is if
you didn't try."
Pinpointing one certain place where the
game was lost is impossible, he said.
Best defense
"You lose the game over 60 minutes,"
Osborne said. "Florida State played ex
tremely well. They have probably the
best defense we'll see all year. Our defense
played hard-especially in the first half.
So then, you might want to blame the
offense. But you can't say that, because
our defense didn't give them a single turn
over, and we had poor field position all
day."
Osborne said that at the end of the
game "an unfortunate set of circum
stances " spelled doom for Nebraska.
Jeff Quinn's fumble at the 10-yard line
was one of those, Osborne said.
"When we're unhappy, we like to
blame someone," Osborne said. "Sure,
Quinn was the one with his hands on the
ball that last play, but we wouldn't have
been on the three (yard line) if Quinn
hadn't made a couple of great plays."
He said the coaching staff was as dis
appointed as anyone else.
"A lot of our coaches, including myself,
were hoping for an undefeated season this

year," Osborne said. "But we will go ahead

our schedule that I think we can't beat.
"A good thing about athletics,''
Osborne said, " is that you get a chance to
check yourself out and see how youll
react to something like this. Now we'll
see how we react to some adversity."
Osborne had a specific idea on what the
Huskers' first reaction Should be.
"We're going to have towork on cutting
down on the turnovers and the dadgum
silly penalties," he said.
Osborne had praise for the Husker fans'
behavior and attitude.
Applaud Seminoles
"I appreciate the way our fans respond
ed to defeat," he said. Cornhusker fans
gave the Semioles a round of applause as
they left the field.
"The Florida State fans have comment
ed on our fans' attitude and how well they
were treated," Osborne said.
Osborne said he was surprised to find
out the Husker offensive line graded
better against the Seminoles than it did
against Iowa or Penn State. He said the
Husker blockers made less mental errors
last Saturday than they did in thetwo
weeks before.
Films also revealed that the Seminole
offensive linemen had better hands than
the game officials gave them credit for.
Both Osborne and Defensive Ends Coach,
George Darlington pointed out several in
stances where Nebraska pass rushers had
their jerseys grabbed, were hooked with an
arm or tackled outright.
Osborne said, however, that all the bad
calls didn't go against Nebraska.
"There were some unusual calls made
on Saturday -both ways," he said.
Jarvis Redwine 's hairline rib fracture
will definately keep him out of the Kansas
game, Osborne said.
"The rib that has the hairline fracture
is probably just as strong as the others are,
but it's mainly the pain factor that's caus
ing the problems now," Osborne said.
"Jarvis is having a hard time even walking
around."

Nebraska's football team went through a good practice
in sweats Monday, Head Coach Tom Osborne said.
Several players missed practices but some were expect
ed to return today, although a few remain doubtful for
Saturday's game against Kansas.
I-back Jarvis Redwine, suffering a cracked rib, is
extremely doubtful for Saturday's game. Osborne said
he wasn't sure when Redwine would be back.
Cornerback Andy Means also remained doubtful for
the Kansas game with a strained knee, and offensive line
man Randy Theiss is questionable with a sprained knee,
Osborne said. Cornerback Ric Lindquist also missed
practice with a sprained ankle and isn't expected to
practice today Osborne said.
Other players who missed practice, but are expected
back today, include quarterback Jeff Quinn, with a
sprained ankle and bruised shoulder, monster Sammy
Sims with a sprained ankle, linebacker Brent Williams with
a sprained knee and defensive tackle Henry Waechter with
a sprained knee.
Osborne said Cjaig Johnson would be the number one
replacement for Redwine and Roger Craig and Mark
Moravec would also be seeing action against the Jayhawks.
