The crew team placed 10th in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships in Syracuse, N.Y. last May. An invitation was extended to UNL to compete in the race. The top 18 teams in the country were invited. Coach Matt Kush referred to this race as the "grand daddy of them all.' Twenty-five schools were represented in the event, with 18 teams being in the same division as UNL: heavyweight novice with a four man boat and coxswain. UNL was the only non-varsity team that was invited to participate. They were compet ing against many big name teams includ ing Yale, Wisconsin, MIT, Dartmouth and Brown. "It's an elite competition," Graves said. "We didn't know if we should have even been there. After the first race, though, we knew we belonged." Preparations for the event kept crew members on a rigorous schedule. They were practicing three times a day for a month. Rowing took place in early morn ing and evening and the afternoon was devoted to running "snakes" on the stadium steps. Cost $2,000 The trip to New York cost about $2,000. Businesses in the Lincoln and Omaha area donated money, Graves said. The only money the members had to send was food on the way up arid back. The members who participated in the race were Coach Matt Kush, John Dundon, Bill Giaves and Charlie Austin as strokes, Kory Kelly as bow, and Joel Merry man as coxswain. They rowed all three days of competition, competing in different heats each day . "We could have done better," Graves said. He noted that the other teams that placed higher did so because of their technique. Kush said that another hindrance was the bad weather, causing rough waters on the last day of competition. UNL didn't have the technique to row on such rough waters with the lightweight boat that they were using. "It was so bad you couldn't even line up the boats. One boat was blown into another lane," Kush said. Better shape "we could have done better " Graves said, referring to the 10th-place finish. "We were in better shape physically than any other team, though," Graves said. He attributed their winning to the team's physical strength. A successful summer helped in their recruiting program this fall, he said. Graves sees the novice program as being better than last year's. It's also larger in size with 60 men and 30 women. The varsity team will be stronger than in the past, even though most are only in their second year of rowing, Graves said. They will be focusing on technique more than they did in the past. Graves sees this as an important addition to their program, because UNL will be rowing against teams who have been rowing four or more years. The first race this season will be the Omaha Midwest Fall Regatta on Oct. 25. It will be a three mile race. The team's goal is to take first place. This will be the team's toughest race, for the main reason that it is the first one of the season, Graves said. The crew team is also looking forward to the Wichita Race in November. The team has a high goal for this race, also. "We should do pretty well in both races," Graves said. "We're stronger than most teams." 91 n fpi n CM ro l&tfh & "S" etfolbeir 5f WU o o iksiirlbeeQjie & Utanrodl tf l&1rh'& "S" Music by: Shoo fin' IFrom Yh Nip Siariing cafl 3:30 P.AA.
