This view was given in a lecture on "Drama in the GDR", sponsored jointly by the English and Modern Language departments on Thursday Sept. 25. The talk, attended by approximately 45 people, centered on the "rules of thumb in Brechtian staging methods" and the director's opinions cohcering these methods. Brecht's work in the early and mid 50s had a widespread influence in East Germany, said Uwe Haus, and this in fluence serves as an illustration of the no tion that "art not only represents man's image, but helps to shape it also," he added. Uwe Haus is visiting the United States for the first time by invitation of a com-' mittee made up of three Pennsylvania schools-Philadelphia, Temple and Villa Nova; he will be directing a production of "Caucasian Chalk Circle" at Villa Nova. His schedule was adjusted, however, to include visits to Kansas State, the uni versities of Kansas and Colorado, and Washington University in St. Louis. Uwe Haus received training in act ing and humanities at Humboldt University in Berlin, and underwent director training at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. He worked as a director and actor in Senften berg and Brandenburg from 1964 to 1968, and then became a director at the Deutsches Theater from 1971 to 1975. He also served as guest director in the Cy priot Theatre in Nicosia, Cyprus for a five-year period beginning in 1975. He currently is teaching at the Institute for Theater Directing in Berlin. In addition, Uwe Haus has had numerous television stagings and radio presentations in the GDR, and has directed 10 major productions the last 10 years in Germany, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Poland and Italy. -Acs ! -ftT - - it i r i - (fiaULQMEPS : D3eDriesirsiD UNL STUDNTS,H2.00,GKRAl $15.00.
