page 12 friday, September 26, 1980 daily nebraskan Revenge, Harris may make Penn State tougher By Tad Stryker A record crowd of over 85000 is expected to fill Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pa. this Saturday to see the Huskers meet Penn State in a nationally-televised game. Coach Tom Osborne expressed his respect for the Nit tany Lions, saying that he was impressed with the way they have played so far this year. He said that this year's Penn State team "isn't a whole lot different from other years.' They may be a little quicker this year, but I didn't think they were that slow last year," he said. "They look pretty good to me." The Lions will be looking to turn the tables, keeping last year's humiliating 42-17 televised loss in mind. The revenge factor, plus the addition of Pete Karris in the defensive backfield and some reshuffling in the offensive backfield could make Penn State a much tougher team, especially on their home field. Tenn State isn't a whole lot different from other years. They may be a little quicker this year, but I didn't think they were slow last year Harris, the brother of Pittsburgh Steeler running back Franco Harris, was not in the secondary to get a first hand view of Junior Miller slicing his teammates to ribbons last year because of academic difficulties. He is expected to give the Lion pass defenders a lot of help. Booker Moore, Penn State's tailback last year, has been moved to fullback. Curt Warner, a sophomore, is playing tailback this season. As a result, the Nittany Lions have introduced more speed to their running game. Nebraska, of course, is not without speed of its own. But besides showing exceptional talent so far, the Huskers have had no real trouble with turnovers. What if Nebraska should commit several early turnovers Satur day? "You just never know," Osborne said. "You talk about poise, and the ability to play well no matter what happens to you, and that's important. Sometime during the year, that's probably going to happen to us and well have to play through it. "That happened to us last year at Iowa," he said. 'There's no way to prepare for it, though, and well just have to rise above it." The Huskers are in relatively good health, Osborne said. Jeff Finn was bothered by a jammed neck during the week, an injury that he sustained in the Iowa game. That injury "probably won't hurt him much as far as the game is concerned," Osborne sakl. "It's not real serious." Osborne was asked to comment on his team's attitude heading into the eame. "Stuff is so hard to say for sure," he said. "I can't really tell you. I think theyU want to play well." lie said he "wished they had practiced a little better," but that he "almost always feels that way." The Huskers are taking 60 players to University Park. "It was pretty easy to make the decisions on who's going to go this time," Osborne said. "But when we have a 55-man limit for conference away games, it's harder to decide. It always seems like we have to leave a few second stringers behind on those." Despite team injuries, swim coach still optimistic By Pat Beecham Even though two of his top swimmers aren't even working out with the team yet, Head Women's Coach Ray Huppert still has high hopes for this year's squad. It's still pretty early but I'm optimistic," Huppert said. "Things look good so far but two of the top swim mers from last year aren't working out yet." Rene Sullivan and Carol Hall are on the injured list. Sullivan has a strep throat and Hall has a knee injury that may require surgery. "Carol's doctor in Witchita, Kan. wants her to do the exercises for now and see what happens, but the doctors in Lincoln wast to operate," Huppert said. Both girls finished second in ther respective events in the Big Eight meet last year. Huppert said he hopes both will be back in the water by Monday. Huppert said he was happy with the way the rest of the team was training, though. "Everybody's working hard right now and we have good competition in the workouts all the time. I'm not worried about people worrying whether they have a place on the team but on everyone improving," Huppert said. Huppert said he thinks the competition between team members will help them improve and "creates a challenge" for them. Huppert said although he got some good recruits this year, he doesn't ever think he can be happy with the recruiting. "You always want more people and better people. But we had a very good recruiting year. All our freshmen should play an important role." Nebraska has nine freshmen on this year's squad and 10 returning letter-winners. Huppert said that all freshmen could do well and four or five of them could score high for the Huskers in conference. Only five Big Eight schools have a women's team but Huppert sad it is still a very tough conference. - "The Big Eight is a tough conference in women's swimming. Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Nebraska all scored at the nationals last year." Nebraska finished third in the conference last year and Huppert said that it will still a little early to predict how the team will do this year. "I think IH hold off on the predictions until I see what other teams look like and see how our kids come off in workouts." Workouts officially started Sept. 15 and so far Huppert has been emphasizing stroke technique. He said that they will start their conditioning in October and that will carry into the second semester until they begin to taper towards the end of the season for championships. Cross country opener The UNL Men cross country team opens its 1980 season tomorrow at Wilderness Park against Kansas State and Itfwa State. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:30 ajn.. This will be the only home meet of the season. The Cornhuskers will be running 10 men with the top seven counting in the scoring. toad Coach Frank Sevigne called Iowa State one of the co-favorites in the Big-8 this year along with Colorado. ulowa State has a very strong team and along with a good Kansas State team this should be a very good test for us, especially this early in the season." He added that this will be a good test for the freshmen since the five mile course is a big diffee rence from the high school distance. Sevigne noted that senior Brian Dunnigan and junior Tom Bowmaster have been running well in practice. Four freshmen that will be counted on Saturday and that have been looking good in prac Uce are Marc Adams, Jeff Fagen, Mark Gokie and Dave Cudmore. The UNL meet i a r . . .
