Wednesday, September 24, 1980 daily nebraskan page 17 Women golfers also successful against lowans ByTadStryker The Husker football team members weren't the only Nebraskans to succeed in athletic contests against lowans last weekend. The UNL Women's Golf team, led by medalist Barb Reimers, won the Iowa University Invitational tournament last Friday and Saturday. Jan Stanard, a sophomore, placed second as the Huskers finished at the top ofaneight4eamfield. Stanard and Reimer are the number one and two golfers, respectively, on the squad, Husker Coach Jerry Fist v said. "We have everyone back from last year," he said, 4and they're all showing improvement." Two freshmen, Cathy Nelson of Millard and Shelly Godeken of Alma, also help, Fisher said. "They made the- trip to Iowa and an earlier one to Oklahoma . City with the team," he said. Trje golfers finished 15th out of 24 teams at the All-College Tournament at Oklahoma City. "It was a three day tournament," Fisher said. 'We played well the first day. poor the next, and good again the last day." He praised Nelson's single round of 73 at Oklahoma City and Codeken's fourth place overall finish at Iowa. "We played pretty well at Iowa," Fisher said. We had the lowest day score ever shot at the Invite-a 3 1 1 . A day score is figured by adding a team's five lowest scores for that day together. Remaining team members are: Robin Scherer, Sue Heggert, Karin Roberts, Lori Miller, and Kim Davis. The team is in its sixth year and Fisher is in his second year as coach. The Huskers won the Big Eight championship when it was at Lincoln five years ago, but haven't reached that level of success since. "But we're getting better,"he said. "I'm pleased with the way we've looked so far. 1 think we're improving an awful lot." Swimming coach predicts this season as good as last By Pat Beecham Husker Head Swimming Coach Cal Bentz is confident that this year's group can be just as good as last year's, when the team won the JBigv Eight swimming and diving championship. "There's no reason why it's not possible (a Big Eight title),'' Bentz said. "I consider this a better team than we had last year." Bentz however, will be without one of his top swimmers from last year, Anders Rutqvist. Rutqvist decided to go back to his home in Sweden where he could get a master's degree in the time it would take him to get a Bachelor's degree here, Bentz said. Bentz is still optimistic, though, and the main reason for his optimism is the overall team depth that he believes he has this year. "I think we have better distribution of our good swimmers this year," Bentz said. "We have pretty good team depth." Bentz said that he was happy with the recruiting year. "We got some good recruits," Bentz said. "You always like to get more swim mers and better swimmers.'' One of the recruits is Matt Rye from Benecia, Calif., who was a National AAU placer, Bentz said. Now recruit Matt Good wrich from Concord, Calif, was recruited as a utility swimmer in the individual medley and the long-distant freestyle. Along with their recruits, Bentz said that the Huskers got a good group of transfer students that will help make them stronger. One of the transfers is Dave Achtemeier from Beloit, Wis.' Achtemeier was a two year Ail-American at Northern Michigan, a Division II school, Bentz said. To go along with their recruits and transfers, Bentz also has 15 returning lettermen to give the squad some experi ence. Bentz said that it is hard to say how everyone will do in a meet but that every one seemed to be working hard. Bentz said that the team has not made any goals for the upcoming season. He said they have to set individual goals for them selves and then select captains before setting down any team goals. The team's first meet will be at the Uni versity of Minnesota Nov. 7. The first meet scheduled in Lincoln is the Christmas Classic Dec. 13. The first dual meet at home will be againsy Drury, Jan. 12. Fisher said that neither season is ' chances to the Big Eight tournament this really emphasized over the other, but, "for spring. He's looking toward the nationals, us our fall season is a little better because i feel that even if our team doesn't our golfers have been playing all summer." qualify for nationals, well have at least one Texas provided a refuge for the golfers individual who will," he said.
