The resolution further slated that ASUN would advo
cate increased funding to support expansion of ethnic
and women studies courses.
A variety of different courses axe offered under women
and ethnic studies, as the two areas are not classes them
selves, according to Senate members.
The Senate heard from a member of the Chicano grad
uate Studies Association supporting the resolution.
Dolores Cardona said requiring students to take the
courses would be "economic ally sound because a lot of
jobs require the ability to get along with other people.
She said the courses would increase understanding of
minority problems, adding that students with a broader
base of understanding become "more marketable.
Doreen Charles, president of the African Peoples
Union agreed.
"This is concerned with every day living." Charles
said. "You can't say you've learned this or that in the
different colleges, if you can't deal with people outside
your culture," she said.
Some senators opposed adopting the resolution be
cause it did not specify the procedure by which the
courses would become requirement!.
