Big Eight Notes
Kansas freshman quarterback Frank Seurcr directed a
touchdown drive and freshman kicker Bruce Kallmcyer
kicked the extra point against Oregon. Kansas Head Coach
Don Fambrough explained his reasons for goTng for the
lie:
"One tiling, we're going with a freshman quarterback.
I didn't want to put any more pressure on him than we
already had. So, I send a freshman kicker out there to tie
the game. That's some logic."
Iowa State running back Dwayne Crutchfield rushed
for 121 yards in his first game ever for the Cyclones.
"We use the term 'BYOB'," Head Coach Donnie Dun
can said. "When the blocking runs out, you have to 'Be
Your Own Blocker'. Dwayne was his own blocker at
times."

when it occurred in May. The regents discussed
the matter at their July meeting.
Brown said that no new .evidence has appeared since
May, ind that he did not understand why the regents
would "react to the same thing twice in two differnt
ways."
He said if the regents pursue the possibility .of re
structuring the Publications Board, "we're going to see
what happens when politicians get involved in newspap
ers." Essex defended the transfer of the letter to Brown
because of Brown's board position. He said previously,
however, that because Brown is a black student his mis
take may have been in selecting Brown over other board
members.
Board member Bud Cuca, former ASUN president,
said that Essex should not be cleared of fault in the
matter, but should not be fired.
"I don't think you're that innocent," Cuca told Essex.
"1 think you screwed up. But I don't think you ought to
be fired.
"I don't want the students of this campus to get the
idea that you were right," he said.

Oklahoma Coach Barry Switzer said he knew Saturday
might not be a good day for the Sooners.
"We got in two buses to come down to Norman and a
mile from the hotel (in Oklahoma City), one of them
blows up. Seventy-five os us had to crowd on one bus."
Colored trailed, 56-0, at a halftime against UCLA.
Coach Chuck Fairbanks had these comments:
"I thought before the game that we were not even
close to being prepared to play a game. We were like a
golfer who practices on a practice tee with no thought as
to playing and managing a course."

Brown also defended his transfer of the letter to
Chambers. He said he brought the letter to Chambers'
attention to discuss the possibility of being sued by Coe.
Coe had earlier named the Daily Nebraskan and Brown in
a possible lawsuit.
Brown said the letter was meant to be a Letter to the
Editor, as did Essex. Conflict arose earlier in attempting
to define the letter as personal-to be received only by
Strunk, or as business meant for publication as a Letter
to the Editor.
Nothing in Coe's May 1 letter differentiated it from
other letters sent to the Daily Nebraskan, Brown said.
Many of Coe's previous letters were used as guest
opinions, Letters to the Editor and as sources for other
stories.
Brown said the May 1 letter differed only in the
severity of remarks, adding that it followed a pattern esta
blished by Coe, who got "more and more bitter" with
each letter.
Three Daily Nebraskan staff members and three other
students spoke before the board. All agreed that the board
should stand by its original investigation in the matter.
