Fill V tan Innovation Texas Instruments technology bringing affordable electronics to your fingertips, Texas Instruments Petition drive starts for air conditioning By Betsy Miller Air conditioning the lounges in Neihardt Residence Center will be discussed at the Residence Hall Association meeting tonight at 7:30 In the Nebraska Union. Gerald Woo, president of Neihardt Center, said he is starting a petition drive at Neihardt for air conditioning in student lounges. Woo said he thinks it is not fair the staff of the Center has air conditioning and the students do not. "The student security office even has an air condition er now and they only use that four hours a night," Woo said. UNL students pay the same annual amount for their residence hall contracts and Woo said he thinks it isn't right that students without air conditioning pay as much as those who do have it. "Cather and Pound (residence halls) block any wind we might get from the east," Woo said. Glen Schumann, assistant director of housing in charge of maintenance, said high costs may prevent the air conditioning of lounges. Schumann said the windows in Neihardt lounges would have to be removed and that action, plus installation of an air conditioner, would cost approximately S800, per lounge. Total cost of air conditioning lounges in Neihardt and Selleck would be approximately $19,000, Schumann said. Schumann said a 1973 study estimated the total cost of putting air conditioners in Selleck Quadrangle rooms would be $300,000. He said the cost today would be "close to a million dollars." "Obviously, the questions is, do you want to invest that kind of money for August and September? (months when air conditioning is needed)," Schumann said. Schumann said a final decision on air conditioning lounges in Neihardt would have to be made by Housing Director Douglas Zatechka, but Schumann said money for the project was not budgeted for this year. Woo said he knows money may not be there for air conditioning and also parts of Neihardt's electrical system would not be strong enough to support air conditioners. He said however he is going to raise the air condition ing issue and see what answers are provided by the UNL administration. He also said Selleck, Burr-Fedde and Love Memorial Halls at UNL are not air conditoned and they cotild join the Neihardt effort to get air conditioned lounges if they wished. Housing officials will also be present at tonight's meeting.
