'Slim Pikins' band will play
at first Big Fling' dance
-Slim Pikinsvill be the
guest band at the "Fiat Big
Fling" free outdoor dance

lot of the Nebraska East
Union.
-Slim Rkinsw is a group
of mid-Kansas musicians
who specialize in high
energy country bluegrass,
country swing and country
rock tunes. Formerly the
"New Hiway Band," "Slim
Pikins" mixes banjo and
fiddle numbers with songs
by the "Eagles' "Pure
Prairie League" 'New
Riders of the Purple Sage "
and others, as well as a
number of original tunes.
Last year's "First Big
Fling," dance drew more
than 1,000 people, and
Galen Maresh of UPC-East
said another good crowd is
expected Friday night.
In case of bad weather, the
dance will be moved inside
the Great Plains Room of
the east union.
The Lincoln Community
Playhouse will be offering
classes in theater tricks,
mime, stage make-up and
adult acting. All classes will
be taught by guest artists.
Mime classes wiQ be
offered on Tuesdays begin
ning Sept. 9 at 3:45 pjn. to
5:00 pjn. The classes wiD
meet 12 weeks with a dem
onstration at the end of the
session. The mime classes
wiD be taught by Anay Hin
rich, who has worked with
and created pieces for famed
mime artist Marcel Marceau.
Hinrich is also on artist-in-residence
for the Nebraska
Arts Council.
The Theater tricks class
will be offered again this
fall for those who missed it
this summer. The class will
highlight six artists during
the course of the six-week
class. The hands-on experi
ence includes dance, juggl
ing, jnime, creative drama
tics, stage make-up and
puppetry.
A stage make-up class
will be offered on Wednes
days at 3:45 starting Sept.
10 for six weeks. Classes are
taught by Wilma Witter and
are open to 8-to 15-y ear
olds. Adult classes will meet
for 10 weeks beginning
Sept. 20. The class is offer
ed to 18-year-olds and up.
Part of each session is
devoted to movement, basic
acting skills, improvisations
and eventually work on
scripted scenes. Catherine
Madden-Metz will teach the
Acting Studio I class. She
received her Master's degree
in drama and literature from
Washington University.

The highly-acclaimed
Beaux Arts Trio, featuring
pianist Menachem Pressler,
violinist Isidore Cohen and
cellist Bernard Greenhouse,
wiD perform Ravel's Trio
in A Minor on "The Beaux
Arts Trio Plays Ravel,"
airing Friday, at 6 pjn.
The program repeats Sept.
10 at 2:30 pjn. on the
Nebraska Educational Tele
vision Network.
The Trio in A Minor,
a favorite of the Beaux Arts
Trio, is one of Maruice
Ravel's most important
Chamber works and one of
the few piano trios written
in the 20the century.
Also showing this week
on NETV will be "The
Desert's Broken Silence,"
a fierce debate between off
road vehicle enthusiasts and
environmentalists to be
aired Saturday at 9:30 ajn.
In recent years the sports
of ofT-road driving and
motorcycling have grown
at a tremendous pace. The
sports also have spawned de
bates about damage to wild
life and desert ecology.
"The Desert's Broken
Silence" examines the
claims of a number of
interest groups seeking to
influence new federal plans
on desert management.
