Summer Utbraikan Juno U, WZO 5 Utter continued from page 4 the reality that education is a lifelong proceaa and not one that ends at age 22 upon graduation. It troubles us to read recent newspa per accounts that imply that lower pay to instructors mandates lowered quality of the education provided. The university has many dedicated faculty who have taught in the division's course programs for years. Student evaluations and con tinued enrollment figures reflect the high value and quality of the instruction in these academic programs. It is therefore, a great disservice to these faculty members to imply that the truly dedicated teacher will reduce his or her effort in the classroom becuase of the dollar factor. The adult student is far more likely to drop out of a frustrating or unsatisfying educational experience than is the 18-year-old. Research in continuing education demonstrates it is only the dedicated, quality teacher who continues to attract and retain an adult clientele. The Division's primary mission ts mandated by the regents in 1909 is to ex tend the resources of the University to the people of the State of Nebraska. It is unfortunate that in some articles and editorials pertaining to the issue of the English classes the true understanding of the role of the Divison has been misrepre sented and erroneous conclusions have been made. The Divsion of Continuing Studies, therefore, regrets that its offer to be of service to the College of Arts and Sciences in their budget-cut dilemma has resulted in derogatory publicity. We re main dedicated to serving the citizens of Nebraska, and specifically, the lifelong learner. Quentin IL Gessner UNL Dean of Continuing Studies Student charged with arson Douglas Wilkening, 19, of 505 Smith Hall, was charged with first-degree arson and arraigned in Lancaster County Court Monday, for allegedly setting fire to bulletin boards at UNL's Smith Dormi tory, university police spokesman Dob Fey said Tuesday. The fires set early Sunday morning, appparently have no connection with the bulletin board fires in Oldfather Kali last spring, UNL police officer Mark Murphy said. "As far as we know, there is no con nection between the fires, said Murphy, who was called to the scene Sunday, fVmtv Jndze'JefFre Cheuv- ront released Wilkening on a $500 bond, and set a June 30 court date. Wakening is originally from Colorado. Papers on second, sixth, eighth and tenth floor bulletin boards were set afire, burning the boards and the carpet be neath them. Fey said. He said the fires burned themselves out and were not seri ous enough to call the Fire Department. Damage wai estimated to be between $375 and $400, Fey said. Fey said he was sure Wilkening was questioned about the bulletin board fires in Oldfather Hall, but no information was obtained. Summer enrollment increases Enrollment in the UNL 1980 summer sessions has increased, with 9,486 stu dents enrolled in its first three sessions, an increase of 429 over 1979. There are 6,496 students enrolled in the first five-week session that began June 9 and continues through July 11, A second five-week session runs July 14 and continues through Aug. 15. oooooooooooooooooo o o 0 o o o o o o o 'A Moving Experience' Skate Rental & Sales Now in the lobby of the GLASS MENAGERIE $2.00 First Hour Second Hour FEES with this coupon O o 0477-6887 o oooooooooooooooooo 0 o o o o o o o o o o o o 5-12Sua-Thur.O 5-lFri.&Sat.O . 1 THEATRE, INC., of Lincoln (in our 18th year of Maflerdrammers) Proudly Present Fireman, Save My Child & The Perils ofPriscilla STARSHIP ENTERPRISE 828 P Street, Second Floor Curtain 8:30 pm Thur.Fri. & Sat, Adm. $1.50 and $2.50 June 28 thru July 12 50$ DISCOUNT ON THURSDAY WITH THIS COUPON Tonight thru Saturday direct from Minneapolis with UBig Walter Smith Excellent up-town Maes and r&b from one of the top bands in the Twin-city area.
