The Empire Strikes Back is here and is a far better film than the original. The use of state-of-the-art technology and a genuine plot, combined with loveable robots and mup pets, make this film a viable product. It is hard to imagine that not every one has seen the original Star Wars, but it isn't necessary to have seen it to enjoy The Empire Strikes Back. As do the science fiction serials of the 1930's, the film starts with the story up to now printed and rolling off into space. The good guys have defeated the bad, but the bad guys are back stronger and more determined than ever. The Empire Strikes Back opens with Darth Vader sending troops and unique walking tanks to planet Hoth to oust the rebels, who are the good guys. Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Han Solo, R2D2 and C3PO all escape in the Mil lenium Falcon, only to discover that this model T-like space ship will not go into "hyperspace." This becomes a running gag throughout the film, as humorous as the banter between R2D2 and C3PO. Review They flee through an asteroid field and land at what they hope is temporary safety in the hands of Lando Calrissian, from whom Han Solo got the Millenium Falcon. While this is happening, Luke has landed on the planet Dagobah to seek Yoda, a small creature created and played by Frank Oz of Muppet fame. Yoda is a Jedi Master. The Jedi knights were the former rulers of the empire be fore it collapsed at the hands of a corrupt government. Yoda has been training the Jedi knights for generations in the use of "the force." He tells Luke that the force is nei ther good nor eviL Here the movie enters a Zen setting, with training similar to the old Kung-Fu television series. Luke en ters a cave and beheads an imaginary Darth Vader, only to find his own face under the mask. With training, the force can read one's mind and help one to see the future and the past. Luke is an impatient youth, and be fore Yoda is through with his training he leaves. He has seen a vision of his friends in pain and feels compelled to help. He is right, for Darth Vader had made his way to the city in the clouds and has captured Han and the rest of our heroes. Luke and Darth Vader have one last light-sabre duel. During the duel, Darth Vader tells Luke something that will surprise audi ences and leave them wondering, and waiting for "Star Wars HI." Special effects abounded in Star Wars and there are more and better effects in The Empire Strikes Back. Lucas spent millions forming his own special effects studio. The scene in which the Millenium Falcon travels through the asteriod Held requires a device called a quad projector. This $500,000 computer-driven machine synchronizes four projectors. The special effects are so well done it is hard to be lieve that they are so complex. If you have delayed seeing the film be cause you feared a long line, relax. The Friday night 7 and 9:30 pjn. shows both had tickets available at show time. The Empire Strikes Back is playing at the Stuart Theater, 13 and P Streets, and probably will be there a long time. Pops director wants more contemporary tunes Educator pubUshe8 b00ks John Williams, the new director of the Boston Pops Orchestra, said he plans to broaden the use of 20th century music to include more comtemporary British and American music. In a nationally broadcast, closed-circuit television press conference held at the Nebraska Educational Television Commission and Network, Williams said that directing the Boston Pops Orchestra is a "refreshing change" from the work he had been doing. Williams has composed scores and acted as musical director for about 50 films, including The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno, Earthquake, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back. Williams was named conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra in January. He is the 19th conductor in the orchestra's 95 year history , succeeding the late Arthur Fiedler, who conducted the orchestra for 50 years. Paying tribute to Fiedler's legacy, Wil liams said, "To follow Arthur Fiedler is somewhat impossible. He is a phenome non and quite irreplaceable in the field of music." The winner of two Emmy Awards for Best Musical Composition from the Na tional Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Williams also has received 13 Academy Award nominations and won Oscars for the scores to Fiddler on the Roof, Star Wars and Jaws. Williams said, however, that compos ing music for films can restrict creativity and the flow of the music. "The music is shaped by the editorial configuration of the film. It's not as natu ral." A musical director becomes involved with a film after it has been edited so that the the composer can catch the over all theme of the film, as well as the mu sical needs for each scene. "Every scene has a tempo. If the hero ine is hanging over a cliff the music must conform." Williams said that American popular music is one of our great cultural herit ages and most sought after exports. IVclcosas summer students. Get a FREE 12 oz.
