UNL Outdoor recreation coordinator, Mark Ebel, and a crew of adventurers
pull into shore along the Dolores River in Colorado.
Students shoot the Snaggletooth rapids
The white, foaming rapids roar
through the valley, bucking a four-man
raft and sweeping it dangerously, vio
lently down the river. Suddenly, the raft
hits a big hole, a depression in the river
bottom. It's stuck, circulating in the
hole's current. One man is swept over
board. The attachment rings which hold
the gear in place are torn loose by the
river's force, and the equipment is also
thrown overboard.
Sound like fun?
Mark Ebel, UNL outdoor recreation
coordinator, said that's what happened
when he took a group on a white water
rapids trip to the Dolores River in Colo
rado May 10-15.
"That was one of the worst trips we've
ever had," he said. He and the nine stu
dents encountered rain, snow and the
Snaggletooth Rapids in the seven days
they were gone.
A big cooler, flipped overboard by the
rapids but still attached to the raft by a
20-foot rope, pulled the raft out of the
circular current, he utid.
Ebel said three trips sponsored by the
outdoor recreation department are com
ing up in July and August A Republican
River canoe trip is planned for July 11 to
13 with a cost of $25 for students. No ex
perience in canoeing is necessary.
A group will leave August 6 to 14 for a
Grand Teton mountaineering trip, and
the cost to students is $125.
A wilderness rafting trip on the River
of No Return (the Salmon River, Idaho)
is planned for August 15 to 24, and will
cost $225. Canoeing experience is recom
mended and participants must be able to
swim.
"The problems existed before that.
There's an awful lot more people taking a
lot more math. It's difficult getting the
kind of budget they (students) need."
Enlarging class size is "our way of re
sponding to the problem, he said.
When classes must be cancelled, the
upper-level (400-or 900-ievel) courses are
eliminated first, he said. This makes sen
iors and graduate students wait longer to
get into classes that are necessary for
graduation.
"We should try to find space for stu
dents. We're not going to recreate the
program in the Continuing Education
Division," he said. The English depart
ment has had to move about 40 sections
of composition over to the extension divi
sion. Not enough faculty
Dauer said, "We don't have enough
faculty to teach the courses we should
offer."
He said Differential Equations 221
would have more than 40 students in it
this fall.
"It's very difficult to teach a good
quality course with that many students.
You need interaction. Teaching tech
niques have to change with larger
classes," he said.
The department hasn't had trouble
hiring faculty, Lewis said, but some fac
ulty members have gone on leave this
year.
Borrow graduate students
"We might normally hope to replace
them," he said. "We can't replace them
with faculty, but we can borrow grad stu
dents." A graduate student would not be paid
as much as a full professor, he said.
As for the quality of teaching, "gradu
ate students often have enthusiasm
which makes up for lack of experience.
"The general nature of it is that
classes are larger, and thus, it's harder for
us to do a good job. What we'd like and
what we live with are two different
things."
