Nebraska's women's track team will be put to the test
once again this weekend at the Big Eight meet Friday and
Saturday at the Ed Weir stadium. Coach Carol Frost feels
the Huskers are ready to meet the challenge. m
"We are really ready both physically and mentally,
Frost said. "We should be favored to win this meet after
the indoor season, but anything can happen, so we have to
be careful not to make many mistakes."
The Huskers ran away with the indoor title, outdistanc
ing second place Kansas by more than 50 points. Frost
said that the only outdoor event that may hurt the Hus
kers is the 10,000-meter run.
Frost said that one pleasant surprise for the Huskers
during the outdoor season has been Katlii Kraai.
"Kathi has done an exceptional job for us throwing the
javelin," Frost said. "She came from nowhere last year
and has really helped us."
Frost also said she has been pleased with Lisa Kramer
in the 1500- and 300-meter races. Distance coach Judy
Zech also said she feels that Kramer can do well at the
meet.
"We are looking for the best season performances from
everyone at this meet and, as far as the distance races go, I
think Lisa Kramer has a good chance of scoring for us."
Frost said that most of the Husker points may come
from the shorter races.
"We have a chance to score everywhere except the
10,000," Frost said. "But our strengths probably still are
in the sprints, the jumps and the pentathlon."
Frost said that the weather has not affected the
Huskers' outdoor season. She did say that the outdoor
season has "gone by so fast" which she credited partly to
the good season they have had and because of the little
time of preparation they have had.
Frost said that one of the performers to watch at the
meet, will be Pam Page of Missouri in the hurdles. She also
said that the Huskers main competition should come from
Missouri and Kansas.
"We've got it within our grasp. If we perform well,
there shouldn't be anyone able to beat us."
Frost said that the Huskers will probably stay with the
same lineup that they have used all year.
"The girls will probably run in the same races they
have all season. We've been successful with what we've
done so there is no real reason to change."
Frost did say that Julie Seaton will not be at full speed
because of an injury but still may compete.
As far as individual championships go, Frost said that
the Huskers won seven at the indoor meet and figure on
about that at this meet also. Zech also feels that the Hus
kers have to do as well as they have in past meets to win.
"Basically we just have to go out and perform the way
we have every meet and, we should win. It won't take
something unusual."
Three trips offered
during presession
The Department of Recreation is offering three
trips for UNL students during the pre-scssion
period.
The highlight is five days of Whitewater rafting
on the Dolores River in Southwest Colorado. This
may be one of the last canoeing opportunities on
the river, because a dam is scheduled to be con
structed soon, according to Mark Ebel, outdoor
recreation director.
The first three days of the trip will be spent
canoeing through the San Juan Mountains and the
last two days will be in desert terrain.
Presently there are three openings left on the
trip, and the total cost is $150. Those wishing to go
or desiring further information should contact Mark
Ebel at the Recreation Department by 5 pm., May
2.
In addition to that trip, Ebel has two outings
planned for the pre -session. One is a snow and rock
climbing tour in Rocky Mountain National Park.
The climb for the summit will take three days.
There are three openings for this $100 trip, and the
deadline for registering is May 8.
The last excursion will be a desert backpacking
tour of the Badlands in South Dakota. Ebel said no
experience is required for the outing. Eight openings
are left, at a cost of $55. A May 16 deadline is set
for registering.
