Events planned for
Clean Air Week
Uncolnitcs will have an opportunity to help clean the
air during the American Lung Association of Nebraska's
annual observance of Clean Air Week, May 4 through 11.
The week will begin with the first YMCA Fun Run of
the season at the Northeast YMCA, 8:30 aon., Sunday
May. 4. Paul Gnadt, running director for the Y, said there
will be half mile, one, three and six mile routes. No times
are kept on the runs and it is a strictly fun event which is
open to the public at no cost.
On Monday, May 5, the Y will continue its emphasis
on pollution-free running as the Dawn Patrol exercise
class begins the day at 6:45 ajn. running to the Y for
class.
Carpool-Vanpool will also be active Monday as they
begin the first day of the Cold Turkey Challenge to kick
the driving alone habit. Families and individuals from
throughout the chy will be keeping track of every trip
they make during the week to see who manages to be the
most fuel efficient in carrying out 'daily activities. Each
household is sponsored by a neighborhood organization
which will receive a donation of $125 for most efficient;
$75, second place; and $50, third place.
The 20 most efficient families will receive a frozen
turkey for participating. The competition is sponsored by
the Lincoln City Council.
Wednesday 45 individuals will participate in the second
annual Great Commuter Race. This year there will be
eight teams competing for a traveling trophy. Each team
consists of a walker, jogger, bicyclist, bus rider and car
pool. Each team will start from a designated starting point
and race to the lobby of the NBC Building.
The race is designed to increase awareness of
alternative modes of transportation beyond the single
passenger car.
The teams represent the Department of Environmental
Control, Nebraska Energy Office, Nebraska Health De
partment, Lincoln-Lancaster County Public Health, Lin
coln media, the City of Lincoln, the YMCA, and state
senators.
Volunteers from Lincoln East High School will be offi
cial starters and timers for the race. Lt. Gov. Roland
Luedtke will present the trophy to the winning team at
12:30 p.m. in the lobby of NBC.
Over the weekend auto emissions will be tested free of
I charge at the Gateway Shopping Center south parking lot.
The tests will be administered in cooperation with the
Lincoln-Lancaster Health Department and Sun" Electric
Corp.
Anyone who takes their car through the free testing
will receive a coupon for a free soft drink from Arby's, in-
formation on auto emissions and fuel economy and a free
Arby's litter bag. Individuals whose cars pass the test will
receive a special Arby's sandwich coupon and a "Clean
Machine" bumper sticker.
The testing will be 10 ajn. to 4 pjn. Saturday, May 10,
and noon to 4 pjn. Sunday, May 11, There also will be a
display in the mall Sunday with information on emissions
testing and balloons and buttons will be given out.
Sunday is also the day of one of the largest celebra
tions of pollution-free travel in Lincoln. The third running
of the Lincoln Marathon, coordinated by the Lincoln
Track Club, will start at the UNL coliseum and end at Ed
Weir Track.
