Representing Nebraska in the Miss USA pageant
next month will be UNL freshman Rebecca Staab,
18.
Staab, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Staab of
Omaha, won the Miss Nebraska title April 5, in Omaha.
The 27 finalists in the pageant were chosen from
200 applicants. The delegates were judged on swim
suit competition, personal interviews, impromptu
questions, poise, evening gown competition and per
sonal speech.
"I don't want to use the title just as a prestige
item," Staab said, "but I want to really make some
thing out of it by representing Nebraska well.'
The Miss USA pageant will be in Biloxi, Miss, from
April 30 to May 16, and will be broadcast live on
CBS-TV Thursday, May 15.
Miss Nebraska will compete against 50 delegates
for the Miss USA title. The winner will Jjien advance
to Miss Universe competition.
The 51 contestants will be judged on swim suit,
state costume, evening gown and personality com
petitions. By April 25, Staab said, she must finish her school
work and take her finals in order to leave for the
pageant. She said between the two competitions she
has had about 20 days to get everything in order.
This includes work on her state costume, evening gown
and other clothing for the pageant.
Since Nebraska has no state director for the title,
Staab said she will determine and pay for all her
appearances.
She said she would like many of her performances
as Miss Nebraska to be for philanthropic activities such
as Easter Seals and March of Dimes. Staab is a member
of Delta Gamma sorority. She was accepted as a
member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma
honor societies. Recently the Mortar Board named her
an honorary freshman.
