frldjy.april25.10GO daily nebraskan page 5 truscrrands M I'm glad the Daily Nebraskan was able to print the letter of Mr. Hubert Brown. From the ideas, insight and accusations made, he must be a political scientist, socio logist and personal friend of the Coes. I didn't have to, Mr. Brown, but I looked up 'apar theid' again. Webster's New World Dictionary defines it . . the policy of strict racial segregation and discrimina tion against the native Negroes and other colored peoples as practiced in South Africa . . . lYn sure, or at least I hope, everyone has a fair understanding of the word. To briefly answer your three questions. Most church groups have condemned South Africa, and various cities have discouraged their citizens from buying Krugerrands, and the three networks have refused Krugerrand ads be cause the South African government is wholly racist. I agree with you. Mr. Brown, on every point. If I agree with you, why am I one of the "fools" that helped with the KEEP petition? Because I don't think Mr. Coe is the . . shrewd . . . racist . . Jiar" you accused him of. I don't know Mr. Coe personally, but I seriously doubt if he is the type of man to come up with the scheme you mentioned. As for your quote "Coe knew the coins would do no good in the Engineering College," I can see you are not in that college. $680,000 is going to help no matter how you look at it. In the letters Mr. Coe has written I've been unable to detect a man that ". . never had a kind thought about black people." I think that he gave the coins in the spirit that we need the money, and he wanted to help UNL in some way. 'To accept the coins in this spirit of gracious ness " was the reason behind the petition. If the circulation of Krugerrands is so crucial a matter, why did you wait until a donation of them was made to cry out, thus endangering other types of donations as well? Our differences are in how you, I and 5,000 other people view Mr. Coe. Roger Stage Sophomore Engineering Thanks for signing KJE.EP. (Krugerrands Enhance Educational Progress) was recently organized to facilitate an avenue through which students could express their appreciation for Mr. and Mrs. Coe's recent donation of 1,300 Krugerrands. K.E.E.P. thanks the 4,700 students who signed our petition. A special thanks is in order to the ISO students who helped collect signatures. We feel extremely satisfied about the overwhelming campus response. This has been the most successful petition drive at UNL in the last four years. In addition, many thanks and compliments were received from UNL faculty and staff. This massive turnout has demonstrated that students greatly appreciate" Mr. and Mrs. Coe's gift. The univer sity community also desires that the Krugerrands remain at UNL for enhancement of the educational quality. KJ2.EP. transmitted the petition and a cover letter to Mr. and Mrs. Coe this last weekend. The Coes have not informed K.E.EP. if they have changed their minds; how ever, we believe that they may reconsider their donation to UNL's Engineering College. Again, we thank all those who made this petition drive a success. John A. Kreuscher, Senior Mark A. Knobel, Senior KKK resurrected It has been very enlightening to observe the actions of those who distort principles in a strained effort to justify UNL's desire to profit from the tainted Krugerrands. Words have been twisted and wrenched into misshapen things without meaning. Conduct (acceptance of the Krugerrands) has been bleached of all moral content so that to the uncritical, it may appear neutral-much in the manner that the Krugerrands, themselves, were "launder ed" by the university's bag man, the NU Foundation. Uncleanness cannot produce cleanliness. The reigning ethical norm at UNL seems to be, the end justifies the means; i.e., let the end be desirable and it matters not what means are used to achieve it. This premise justifies for "educational" purposes, the profit derived from prostitution, dope-pushing, child porno graphy and Nazi-made lampshades from the skin of Jews. UNL would welcome it all; but of course it must first be laundered by the NU Foundation. Fine human beings sprout from such an environment of moral expediency. This Krugerrand issue is fraught with symbolism too striking to ignore. Look at the petition drive (called KEEP) whose aim is to tighten the foundation's strangle hold on the Krugerrands. The two leaders, according to the Daily Nebraskan, are named Kreuscher and Knobel; thus giving us "Kreuscher & Knobel for Krugerrands" (KKK). Freud could not have contrived better imagery. That trio of letters has always been at the center of much of the brutal, ugly history of American racism. Though the "KEEP'ers" have resurrected them and are trying to dress them in new clothes, they cannot alter the nature of the vicious scoundrels who' will wear them.
