By Jim Fad J is All the peoples of Europe suffered during World War II, but none suf fered as irreparable damage as the Jewish people, Lucy Dawidowicz, a noted Jewish historian, said Monday. Although the Soviet Union lost 11 million people in the war compared to the death of six million Jews, the Jewish race was hurt more than the Soviets, Dawidowicz said. Two-thirds 0f au European Jews were killed by the Nazis, destroying the biological basis of the Jews in Europe, she said. "All the peoples of Europe recovered from the war and restored their coun try and culture, except the Jews, Dawidowicz said "That is why the Jewish Holocaust means so much to surviving Jews. They feel they have lost their past. The continuity of Jewish history has been broken," she said. Dawidowicz said Nazism has come to represent the essence of evil. Only in Nazi Germany has one country been devoted to the extinc tion of one race. But, she warned, it could happen again. Dawidowicz is the author of the award-winning book The War Against the Jews, 1933-45. She was a profes sor of social history at Yeshiva University in Israel, where she held the Eli and Diana Zborowski Chair in Holocaust studies and also served on the President's Commission on the Holo caust. She is now devoting full time to writing. Dawidowicz spoke to about 200 people in the Ne braska Union on "Thinking About the Holocaust" in a talk sponsored by the UNL History Department and the Talks and Topics Commit tee.
