First Place Pictorial Tom Gessner
By Patti Gallagher
The three judges leafed through stacks of prints, in
stantly accepting or rejecting an entry In Nebraska Press
Photographer's Association competition last weekend.
With both winners and losers present to see the fate of
their photographs it was, in the words of one present, "a
real ego workout."
According to Tom Gessner, who was named student
photographer of the year, "It's nerve-wracking as hell to
watch the judges move your pictures from second to third
back to second."
UNL senior Mark Billingsley, Daily Nebraskan photo
chief, was runner-up in the student division.
From the professional entries, Ilumberto Ramirez of
the Lincoln Journal-Star was named photographer of the
year. Jt was the second consecutive title for Ramirez, who
is also the president of the NPPA.
Judging the two-day event were Bob Modersohn and
David Peterson of the Des Moines Register and Tom
Peterson, photo chief of United Press International's Des
Moines bureau.
UNL senior Mary Lou McGinty captured first place in
features with a print of two ballet dancers.
In the pictorial category, Gessner took first with the
boy bus rider taken from his portfolio.
More than 40 prints were entered in the Portrait
Personality category, with top honors going to UNL
senior Pat Kovanda.
In the news category for students, UNL student Rick
Selah won with his shot of a skateboard accident victim
receiving medical assistance.
According to one judge, good news pictures don't
need a lot of explanation. When you can look at a picture
and tell right off the bat what happened, it has merit."
In the sports category, Mark Billingsley placed first
with a shot of a Husker basketball player receiving a blow
on the head from the ball.
Gessner swept the picture story category, with three
of the five places being his work. His layout of the pope
in Iowa won first place.
Mitch Hrdlicka, also a Daily Nebraskan photographer,
took first for Sports Layouts. Hrdlicka's layout, entitled
"The Nebraska Gymnasts retain NCAA Crown "included
shots from the team's " victory last weekend.
