Students drive to extremes
for E-Week mileage awards
By Betsy Miller
"I took out the spare tire, the jack and
the tools from my car," said Dan
Macholan, senior. "I want to avoid the
added weight. We also filled the tires with
38 lbs. of air, and 32 lbs. is maximum."
What prompted Macholan to take these
drastic measures? It was the E-Week Road
Rallye which took place Tuesday at 1:30
p.m.
The approximately 100-mile rallye re
quired drivers to follow a set of directions
which took them around northwest Lan
caster County, according to Bill Bennett,
junior, Road Rallye co-chairman.
Twenty -nine entrants left the Engineer
ing Center parking lot, hoping to return in
time to earn the first prize trophy. The
rallye results were not available at press
time.
Bennett and Mike Miller, senior, Road
Rallye co-chairman, supervised a test of
each car's emissions and noted their mile
age. The drivers, then filled their tanks a a
nearby gas station and left in one minute
intervals.
When, or if, the drivers successfully
follow their instructions and return to the
Engineering Center parking lot, they refill
their tanks to see how much fuel was con
sumed. The miles-per-gallon for each driver
is figured by checking how many miles the
driver covered during the rallye, Bennett
said.
The drivers' written instruction can be
tricky to follow. Very few cars finished last
year, Bennett said.
However, other problems besides the in
structions may be beset the drivers.
"It was muddy last year; we got stuck
and never finished. A farmer pulled us out
of the mud," said Tim Moody, a sopho
more rallye entrant.
oooooooooooooooooo
Moody and his partner of last year, Jeff
Sokolik, sophomore, tried the raflye again
this year in an attempt to better last year's
performance.
The winners of the event do not go
away empty-handed. Trophies are given for
the best gas mileage and even the worst
mileage driver gets a special "gas hog"
award-a trophy with a small pig fixed to
the top.
Last year's winning team, seniors Kevin
Stark and Jim Nolan, gave no specific tips
for winning.
"Follow the instructions closely,"
Nolan said. "Some people have all kinds of
equipment like compasses to help them.
We go by human instinct."
In addition to the Road Rallye, E-Week
will include an open house Thursday from
4:30 to 9 pm. and Friday from 2:30 to 9
p.m. at the Engineering Center. Many dis
plays and prize-winning exhibits will be
ready for public viewing, . said Cary
Schmidt, an E-Week spokesman.
The E-Week Picnic for Engineering and
Home "Economics College students will be
Wednesday at 5 pjn. on the field east of
the Women's P.E. Building, Schmidt said.
On Thursday at 7 pjn. there will be a
Mini Tractor Pull at Gateway Mall. Friday
morning at 10 ajrt. a Mouse Trap Race will
take place in the Centrum. This race uses
mouse trap springs to power a small car
carrying a 4 lb. brick fort20 feet, Schmidt
said.
J.W. Forrester will discuss "Modeling
Economic Behavior" Friday at 1:30 pjn.
in the Nebraska Union. Forrester is a mem
ber of the Inventors Hall of Fame and
helped develop system dynamics.
Will Rogers, Jr., a noted lecturer, will
talk about "The American Scene" during
an awards banquet Saturday at 6:30 pjn.
at the Villager Motel. Rogers will address
the general public at 8:30 p m ,
