I will just ask the reason why. Mr. Belt pursued this case
with such fervor. Was Mr. Celt that concerned about our
rights, or was the real reason that when Mr. Belt helped
count the ballots and saw the results of the first ballot
that he realized his candidate had lost? I do not know the
answer to this question, but I thought that before the
public draws a conclusion concerning W students, all
the facts should be made public.
Thank you,

Housing praised
We, the undersigned, firmly disagree with ASUN reso
lution 41, which dealt with current student situations in
HeppnerUI.
Having heard debate from students in housing govern
ment, university officials, and students of Heppner III, we
feel that the housing office took the appropriate action
and are in total support of their decision.
After the students developed a reputation for disrup
tive behavior, they did receive numerous warnings from
housing officials: they chose not to make any effort to
remedy the situation. Opportunities were given for meet
ings of the students with housing officials, however, the
situation was not resolved. We realize not all students on
Heppner III were involved in activities which made it dif
ficult for members of the floor to live in a reasonable aca
demic atmosphere. These disruptive and physically de
structive actions have intimidated many of the students of
the floor and of the dorm to a point where they will not
disclose .the responsible parties involved.
We feel through these written warnings and floor meet
ings with housing officials, the due process deserved of the
students was given. Also a definite housing contract viola
tion was established.
Therefore, since specific students cannot be identified
in this situation, university officials have been forced to
relocate members of Heppner III to relieve the disruptive
and destructive environment which seems to perpetuate
itself. We firmly support this action in contradiction with
senate floor action on resolution No. 41 .

Move unnecessary
Maybe we aren't politically involved, but we are con
cerned about some friends and the battle that they have
just taken on. They are being denied the right to appeal
a supposedly "non-disciplinary" action, or is it disciplin
ary? With four weeks of school left, why move 26 guys to
separate dormitory floors? The hassle these guys have to
go through to move is tremendous. Many of them don't
have cars and have to move as far as Harper. These has
been a notice posted that these guys moving out of the
complex must have their vali-dine pictures retaken. How
much study time does this take, running back and forth to
administration when, by the time you get the new vali
dine, you may use it only once? We can't say that there
has been no damage to the floor, but if 26 guys wanted to
do damage, would the floor still be standing? Probability
says that maybe five or six guys (or maybe one or two)
did the majority of the damage, but why punish their
friends? Moving is also a hassle emotionally. If they do get
settled enough to study, there-may be problems with re
adjusting to a new roommate thus grades will suffer . . .
if they haven't already . . . House authorities ... can your
consciences handle this, and if you can, how human are
you? Students, speak up !
Students, speak up and help these guys regain their
rights as students. Isnt it innocent until proven guilty?'
How can you prove yourself innocent unless given the
right to present your case and appeal?

'Too many blamed'
I would like to clear up some of the issues stated in a
recent article on Heppner III. First, I would like to clarify
the facts that we aren't trying to justify our actions by
blaming it on poor living conditions. The vandalism occur
red, it was needless, and we realize that. What concerns
us is that this vandalism has been laid upon the shoulder
of the whole floor, rather than just upon those that have
participated in the destructive acts. This is guilt by associ
ation. Up to 10 people that have never participated in
vandalism, have never been written up, are being arbitrar
ily moved. We have been told that the only way to stay on
floor is if we turn in the names of the people who de
stroyed University property. Once again, many us simply
don't knOw. Even though some people have not been in
volved, Dr. Zatechka has told us that no appeals of his
decision will be accepted. The right for a student appeal is
guaranteed in the Student Code of Conduct. This right has
been denied. Without this appeal, we will have to move by
Friday, with four weeks of school left. I'm sure that
changing. into a new environment, surrounded by stran
gers, is not going to be conducive to study. I think that it
is unnecessary to inconvenience people that weren't
involved, when just moving the people that were involved
would solve the problem. It seems to me that by removing
the tumor housing is taking a lot of healthy tissue with it.

UNL no vacuum
In reviewing Mr. Belt's guest opinion of March 26th an
ominous feeling overcame me. Mr. Belt's criticisms center
on the Student Court's dealing with a "real life" problem
on a "real ufe" basis. It seems that someone should re
mind Mr. Belt that the halls of academia do not exist in an
ivory -towered vacuum. It is a "real life" world out there
Mr. Belt! Any decision made by the Student Court is sub
ject to suit in "real life" court and therefore, the tennents
of law are ultimately applicable.
As the student government is dedicated to representing
and protecting the students of the University, it would
seem logical to follow the rules of law of the locality
wherein those students reside. To protect the students
with those "technicalities" which serve their purposes,
e.g., the right to appeal an alleged injustice, but to con
. demn other, equally applicable technicalities" which do
not meet some individual's approval, is an act of
hypocrisy more frequently performed by a dictatorial
government than the representative government A.S.U.N.
professes to be.
Insofar as the accusation that the Student Court
Justices were "probably getting laughed at by their
buddies across town," this contention is both wholly in
appropriate and erroneous. Regardless of whether each in
dividual agrees or disagrees with the Court's, decision in
this particular case, the Justices of the Student Court are
to be commended in attempting to protect both the
University and its students in a very complex and contro
versial issue.
