Two UNL School of Journalism students were winners
in the February writing competition of the William
Randolph llcarst Foundation Journalism Awards
Program. . . .
Placing first in the competition in writing personality
profiles was Margaret Stafford, 21, a senior in the news
editorial sequence.
She wrote an in-depth profde of James Risscr, winner
of two Pulitzer Prizes and an NU journalism graduate who
is chief of the Washington Bureau of the Des Moines

Deborah SJianahan from La Vista, placed 10th. Sic
wrote a profile of Omaha sportscaster Lyell Bremscr.
Stafford's winning entry earned a $1,200 scholarship
and an opportunity to compete in the National Writing
Championships in May. Shanahan received a $100 scholar
ship. The' School of Journalism received a matching
amount in both instances.
Both stories were written for the depth reporting class
of Prof. Jim Patten.
