Gymnastics finalists to be picked today
By Shelley Smith
Sports Editor
The NCAA Gymnastics Committee will select 10 teams
and six individuals from each of the four gymnastics re
gions today to compete in the NCAA Gymnastics meet
scheduled for April 3-5 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
One team must be selected from each region (East,
Mideast, Midwest and West) upon recommendation from
each regional advisory committee. Six more teams will be
selected at large.
Bill Roetzheim, chairman of the NCAA Gymnastics
Committee said he will conduct a conference call with
representatives from each regional committee at 10 a jti.
today to determine the participants.
Defending NCAA , champion Nebraska, currently No.
1 in team point averages, is almost assured of a bid be
cause of that ranking, Roetzheim said.
Iowa State, Oregon, Southern Connecticut, Oklahoma
and UCLA ranked 2-6 respectively, are also almost assured
of bids, he said.
Until this year, teams and individuals competing in the
national meet were selected by regional competitions. Be
cause of the expense for teams paid to travel to the re
gional competition, the meets were eliminated, Roetzheim
said. .
The NCAA pays for all travel and accomodations to
national meets, but not regionals, he explained.
Nebraska Gymnastics Coach Francis Allen, serving as
assistant meet director until the competition begins, said
plans for the meet, thus far have had few problems.
"It should be a neat showcase for gymnastics," he said.
The gymnastics equipment will be brought in from the
American Equipment Company in Jefferson, Jowa to en
sure what Allen termed "neutral" equipment advantage.
"Gymnastics equipment is like a pole vaulter's pole.
You get used to a certain give in the equipment you prac
tice on. We want to make sure the equipment is fair for
eacji team. Each team will have practice time to get used
to it," he said.
Most of the athletes will arrive in Lincoln Tuesday
April 1 , Allen said, however, some will arrive as early as
Sunday.
American gymnasts Kurt Thomas, a graduate of Ind
iana State, and Bart Conner, who red-shirted at Oklahoma
are expected to be spectators at one day's events, Allen
said. Also, Indiana State and U.S. Olympic Coach Roger
Counsil is expected to attend.
ABC has scheduled a broadcast of the meet's highlights
on its Sunday program , Wide World of Sports.
