Sample selection opposed

Steven Sample has run into opposition in
the selection process for a new president
of Auburn University in Alabama, accord
ing to the editor of Auburn's student news
paper. Rick Harmon, the editor, said Alabama
Gov. Fob James, who also is a member of
the Auburn Board of Trustees, wants to
hire an Alabaman for the job instead of
Sample.
In a recent trustees vote. Sample tied
for the post with Alablman Hanly Funder
burk 6-6. TTie problem, Harmon explained,
is that faculty and student boards involved
in the selection favor Sample for the job.

Harmon said the hiring tie-up could be
a stalling technique.
Ttie fear is that while the process u

Frances French, an Auburn faculty
member, said she hopes that Sample
doesn't withdraw.
"The faculty is disturbed and
embarrassed, French said.
French helped circulate a faculty
petition that asked some of the board
members not to confine their choices for

of about 1,000 faculty members. French
said the petition was representative of the
entire faculty because it was circulated
during an exam week on "dead day,' when
few faculty members were on campus. She
said almost all faculty approached signed
the petition. Some administrators called to
support the petition but couldn't go on
record, French said.
