to play Missouri tonight

The Nebraska women's basketball
team will take its 21-6 record into
Region VI competition at Drake Univer
sity in Des Moines, Iowa, this weekend.
The Drake Bulldogs prevented
Nebraska from entering the competition
with the first place seed, as Drake got
by the Huskers in the final game of the
sub-regional Saturday, 71-65. UNL led
at halftime and for much of the second
half before losing at the free throw line.
The Huskers had one more field goal
than Drake when the final box score
came outr
Nebraska beat Creighton, 8147 and
Minnesota, 72-59, to advance into the
finals. The Huskers had been seeded
third heading into the tourney, while
Minnesota was second and Drake first.
"I think the kids have done well.
I don't think there is a coach in the
region that would have picked us to
finish first or second in. the north
region," Husker Coach Lorrie Gallagher
said. "They (Nebraska) were looking the
way I'd hoped they would look at' the
end of the season."
Nebraska will have to give a top per
formance, however, if it is to get by Big
8 runner-up Missouri in the opening
round of Regional play this Thursday.
Hie Tigers, 20-12, finished third in the
south-sub-regional last weekend, behind
Central Missouri State and Kansas State.
Kansas, who was expected to win the
Region, finished a surprising fourth, but
received an at-large bid to Regionals.
Missouri is led by Jennie Skimbo,
who is averaging 17.7 points and 12
rebounds, and Dana Supstiks, with a
14.4 scoring average. Second -leading
scorer Julie Maxey is out with a torn
ligament. ......
Senior Diane DelVigna still leads the
Nebraska scoring contingent, with a
19.5 average, while Kathy Hagerstrom,
a freshman forward from DePere, Wise,
has been the Nebraska scoring leader or
co-leader in six of the last eight
Nebraska games and the rebounding
leader in four , of the last six games.

Nebraska's men's golf team will travel to
Texas this week to compete in the Gulf
Stream Invitational and according to Head
Coach Larry Romjue, the Huskers will be
trying to improve.
"I was a little disappointed with our
performance last fall," Romjue said. "We
just didn't play very well. Lots of improve
ment is needed fdr us to do well."
.Fifteen teams will compete in the
invitational, and Romjue said Wichita State
and Oklahoma should, offer tough
competition.
Romjue said the key to the Huskers'
success will be the seniors' performances.
He said several of the seniors didn't
perform as well as expected last fall.
The addition of juniot Randy Sock,
who was ineligible first semester, should
help the team, he added.
Romjue said that the Huskers have been
working out all winter and staying in good
shape. He said the team has been holding
regular practices all winter, using the nets
to help their inside swing and playing
basketball to keep in good physical
condition. m t 4
This year's Big Eight race will be tough,
Romjue said. Oklahoma State, last year's
champion, will be the team to beat this
year, he said, and Oklahoma and Colorado
will be tough also.
The Huskers finished third in the con
ference last year, but will have to "fight
to stay there ," Romjue said .
Sock will be joined on the trip to Texas
by Knox Jones, who Romjue said will
probably be the number , one player for
the Huskers this year. Jones was All-Big
Eight, took sixth in the conference as a
freshman and had a 735 average for seven
rounds last year. The other golfers making
the trip for Nebraska will be seniors Jim
Julian, Bill Head, and Jeff Klein, and fresh
man Mark Maness.
Romjue said the Huskers should have
good practices before the May National
Championships and the six tournaments
scheduled for the Huskers to compete in
this Spring. The competition will be good
for the team because of the layoff they have
had since Fall. ,
Apathy

Student fees are the sticky issue. Steller
points to Bowling Green University which
recently raised a $9.75 million center. The
center was conceived of and pushed entire
ly by one student and a cadre of his friends
at Bowling Green. Students pay $29 per
quarter, roughly $90 a year for a complex
open year around, 18 hours a day. Steller
says this computes into about 30 cents a
day for the center. ,
Money for salaries ,
Currently UNL students pay $3.14 per f
semester for their recreational facilities.
Most pf the money, according to Steller,
goes back to students in the form of salar
ies for referees and supervisors.
. Steller said the recreation department is
lucky to have, , the cooperation of the P.E.
and athletic departments to, be. able to use
their facilities practically free. -
But he says problems with using class
buildings and athletic facilities arise be
cause of time conflicts.
"People complain because athletes have
priority over racquetball courts in the
afternoons," Steller said. "But the courts
do belong to the Athletic department.
They were built with their money."
Steller said scheduling conflicts could be
avoided with a separate complex. Also, stu
dents would be. able to participate in a
sport without having to take it formally for
a grade, an intimidating experience for
many. . , .
Good opportunity
Steller says the architecture projects are
an opportunity to get some good informa
i tion without paying for it. The class will be ;
trying to sell their designs. The job of the
recreation department now is to sell the :
idea to students.
"We plan to go to university groups like
residence halls, -.Greeks and off-campus :
complexes to get input. If they seem to not :
want it, it will drop right then," Steller
said. .".'- -' -v
"This building is sort of a dream for.
me," he said. -"If it occurs, it will be great.
I just don't know what people think right
now. Everybody wants to tear down. No
body wants to help construct it."
