Women's basketball team downs Creighton, 81-47
frlday, february 29, 1980
ByTadStryker
The UNL women's basketball team
sparked by freshman forward Kathy Hager'
Strom's 23 points, easily defeated Creigh
ton, 8147, in the first round of the AIAW
Sub-Regional Tournament played
Thursday at the Bob Devaney Sports
Center.
The Huskers broke open a slow,
uneventful game when they began to move'
out of their zone defense and double-team
the ball, forcing Creighton into numerous
errors. This, plus Hagerstrom's steady
completion of 20-foot jump shots, helped
Nebraska to a comfortable 41-25 half-time
lead.
The Lady Jays, who started four fresh
men, took advantage of a Husker letdown
at the start of the second half. With 13:50
to go, Creighton had moved to within 1 1
points, trailing only 46-35. But when their
center, Cathy Try on, hurt her ank'e as she
went for a loose ball, Creighton deflated.
Hagerstrom immediately converted a
three-point play to give the Husken a 49
35 lead, and from then on, things rapidly
went sour for the Lady Jays. Only fresh
man guard Jean Tierney, who led Creigh
ton with 12 points, could penetrate the
Husker defense at all, and she couldn't
keep up the pace against the Huskers
balanced attack.'
Besides Hagerstrom's 23 points, the
Huskers got 14 from their all-time leading
scorer, Diana Del Vigna; 10 from Carol
Garey and Lynne Miller. Laura Tietjen also
contributed seven points. The Husker
bench enjoyed a productive night, accumu
lating 30 points.
In other first-round action, top-seeded
Drake handled Iowa State 85-73, North
west Missouri State edged Iowa 73-71 in
overtime, and second-seeded Minnesota
beat South Dakota, 78-68.
Drake will take on Northwest Missouri
State Friday at 6 p jn. and at 8, Nebraska
and Minnesota will meet in semifinal ac
tion. The final and consolation games will be
played Saturday night. The top three teams
in the tournament will be assured of a spot
in the regional tournament next weekend
at Drake University.
LSU crowd . . .
Continued from Page 10
Allen is quick to add that traveling to
LSU is not all rosy. The team lost the last
time it visited LSU. Allen said LSU, the
country's seventh ranked team, has been
competing well this year and have a fine
all-around entry in Jorge Cazares. Cazares
finished fourth in the Mardi Gras Invita
tional in the all-around.
"We're coming into a situation a lot like
last week," Allen said. "They (Southern
Connecticut) had everything going for
them. They had the crowd behind them
and nothing to lose."
Although Allen said the success of this
season hinges on the NCAA meet scheduled
April 3-5 at the Bob Devaney Sports Cen
ter, he said the loss at Southern Connecti
cut hurt.
"We would have liked to have gone two
straight seasons with an undefeated dual
record; and hopefully finish as undefeated
national champions again," Allen said. The
Huskers were 6-0 a year ago and 5;0 this
season until the loss.
i Despite the loss, Allen said his team got
good things from the meet.
"The good . thing about the Southern
Connecticut meet was that we didn't bomb
out," Allen said. "Our scores were good
and that should help us get the top berth in
the NCAA meet."
While Southern Connecticut's 279.70
score is the nation's highest this season, the
Huskers' 278.30 was the team's second
highest. The Huskers had to compete with
out the services of Steve Elliott, who
doubles as a diver on the Husker swimming
team. Allen also had to pull number three
all-aroiinder Mark Williams out of the floor
exercise and vaulting events to prevent
further aggravation of a back injury.
Williams is expected to be at full
strength Sunday, Allen said.
Allen said he has noticed a change in the
team since the loss, especially since the
LSU meet will be the Huskers last one be
fore the Big Eight and NCAA meets.
"If there's an advantage to the loss, they
know they aren't invincible," Allen said.
"There were some on the team that must
have thought all they had to do was show
up to win.
"Everybody's, working a lot harder and
improving' at a pretty good pace," Allen
added. "They're aware of the situation and
what they have to do. They know Iowa
State is going to be fired up to beat them
at Big Eight and in the NCAAs." . ,
