Bus, airlines offer special fares for spring trips
By Rose Fitzpatrick
Bus lines and most of the major airlines have some
special rates for spring travelers.
Continental Trailways and Greyhound bus lines both
have 7-, 1 5- and 30day unlimited travel passes.
A 7-day pass is SI 56, a I5lay pass is $204.15 and a
30-day pass is S340.25 from -Trail ways and $34030
from Greyhound.
According to several travel agencies, there are special
rates on most of the major airlines, but tickets must be
purchased a week in advance and the purchaser must stay
seven days, except for Frontier Airlines which requires
travelers to stay over one Saturday night instead of the
seven day plan.
All major carriers also have a family plan in which the
head of the house travels for full price, the spouse gets a
50 percent discount and children under 17 cost 40 per
cent of the regular fare. Tickets must be purchased be
fore March 27 and travel must be completed by May 31.
Supersaver plan
United and American airlines have a "supersaver" for
a percentage off of regular fare usually determined by
miles traveled. Tickets must be purchased one week in
advance of travel and the maximum time for stay is 60
days.
Eastern and American airlines have an unlimited travel
ticket by which the purchaser has unlimited travel for one
price. Eastern Airlines routes include Mexico and the
Caribbean. The' stay must be between seven and 21 days
and not in the home destination.
Prices for these tickets are $472 to $504 for a person
traveling alone and $372 to $399 each for two people
traveling together. There are some restrictions.
Employees of local travel agencies said there is no
special rate for students and no special stand-by rate.
Debby Berthelsen of . AAA Cornhusker Motor Club
said if a person is traveling alone it usually is less expen
sive to fly than drive.
Travel costs
Berthelsen said that when comparing air fare to auto
travel costs she uses a model for the Midwest. . r f
She said a 19.1 cent per mile auto travel cost figure is
based on an eight-cylinder, 1979 Chevrolet. This includes
gas, oil, maintenance, tires and taxes. It is somewhat high
er to allow for unexpected expenditures, she said.
For the traveler who will not be driving or buying a bus
or airline ticket, hitchhiking is "legal on Nebraska high
ways provided the pedestrian does not interfere with the
normal flow of traffic," according to Sergeant Jim Pear
son of the Nebraska State Patrol.
Pearson said interfering with traffic means that vehicles
, would have to go out of their way to avoid hitting you.
Hitchhiking is illegal on the interstate but it is legal on
the ramps leading to the interstate, as long as the
pedestrian is not interfering with the nonnal flow of
traffic.

Spring break trips via the friendly skies can be cheaper on most airlines if tickets are purchased in advance and if
the purchaser stays more than seven days before returning. "
