daily nebraskan page 1 1 Wednesday, february 20, 1980 Baseball... Continued from ?agt 10 Although second baseman John Russo was graduated, Sanders said the Huskers will have more depth in the middle infield positions this year. Greg Schaefer, who started at shortstop last year, will be the team's second baseman. He hit 279 in 1979. Senior Kelly Combs is a returning letterman at shortstop. Two newcomers from which Sanders expects big things are juniors Chris t Chavez and Mark Prior. Chavez, a transfer from West Los Angeles. Junior . College, ; batted 317 last year while earning All . Western State Conference honors. Prior is from Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. Calif, where he hit .280 in 1979. . The Huskers must replace first baseman Pete O'Brien who hit 325 and had six homers and 65 RBIs last yer. O'Brien signed with the Texas Rangers instead of coming back to UNL for his senior year. The top candidates for the job are junior Tim Sinovich and freshman Steve Stanicek. Sinovich was a two-year starting catcher at Central Arizona Junior College. Stanicek, a 16th round draft choice of the St. Louis Cardinals, earned ' All-State honors in Illinois last year. j. Val Primante, 1979 catcher, graduated, but senior letterman Mark Haas, a 275 hitter, and newcomers Mark Haley arid Nick Richards are ready to fill the spot. Haley, a transfer from Santa Barbara Junior College, hit J 26 last season and was named the team's Most Valuable Player. The Huskers have lost pitchers Jeff Costello and Tim Pettit to graduation, while Jim McManus signed with the Chicago Cubs instead of finishing his senior year. The Huskers also have lost last year's top reliever, Gary Nolting. Notling was dis missed from the team for the season because of disciplinary reasons. Those four pitchers accounted for 21 wins last year. Sanders, however, has three pitchers, ' seniors Cliff Faust and Ray Tromba and junior Tim Burke, that were regularly in the starting rotation. Sophomore letterman Mike .Vojtesak and Mike Harlander both return after post ing 4-0 and 5-2 records respectively last year. Sanders said JUCO transfer Rick Evans and Murray, Utah freshman Steve Gehrke should see considerable action for the Huskers.. Sanders said this year's team should be hungry for success. "We had a good year," Sanders said. -We made it to the Big Eight playoffs and got second (behind Oklahoma) and went to an NCAA Regional. But we have some un finished business to take care of." ttfi mite FOR SALE 1967 MGBGT good engine, transmission w new clutch.
