Foundation grants
$40,000 to UNL
Grants totaling $40,000 have been given to several
UNL projects to support educational, cultural and
social objectives.
The donations were made through the Cooper
Foundation, an organization that seeks projects
showing promise of educational or cultural improve
ment, according to Jack Thompson, foundation presi
dent. A challenge grant of $20000 was given to the
Sheldon Art Gallery.
'The project is still in its very early stages, so we
won't know what types of sculpture we will be receiv
ing until sometime next fall," said Norman Geske,
museum director. There is also the possibility of pur
chasing one of the pieces.
The Cooper donation represents the matching local
funds needed to secure a similar donation from the
National Endowment for the Arts, Geske said.
A statewide program to improve the teaching and
writing of English among high school and grade school
students has been selected to receive $10,000 for con
tinuing support of the program.
The program, organized by UNL, selects promising
high school English teachers and brings them together
each summer to discuss teaching methods and ways to
improve those methods.
Two $5,000 grants have been given to UNL in sup.
port of significant proposals for faculty research in the
arts and humanities.
'Teachers will be asked to submit proposals to the
university, which will then submit them to the founda
tion. The board will then make the final selection
based on the project, Thompson said.
Projects in the arts and humanities showing a re
cognizable contribution will be favored, he said.
Money for the donations originally came from the
profits of a string of movie theaters owned by the
foundation. Most have been sold, so the grant money
now comes from income investments, Thompson said.
